Virginia Swindal Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 30, 2015.

Swindal, Virginia Palmer

of Tampa died in Tampa on March 29, 2015 after a lengthy illness. She was born to Whitfield and Margaret Palmer on July 12, 1923. She was educated in Ocala schools and graduated from the Bartram School in Jacksonville. She graduated from the Florida State College for Women in 1944. She later attended Tulane University for graduate work in the social work field. She was predeceased by her first husband, Lt. William Walden Corry of Quincy, who died in combat during World War II in January 1945. She was predeceased by her sister, Margaret Palmer Ayres of Ocala, and by her second husband, Fred.

Virginia married Frederick L. Swindal of Jacksonville, a U.S. Marine who fought in the Pacific theatre of World War II, in 1948 and they relocated to Tampa that same year. Virginia and Fred were married for 53 years, until his death in 2002. Mr. Swindal was the longtime owner/operator of the Tampa branch of Swindal-Powell Furniture Company.

Mrs. Swindal is survived by her brother, Whitfield M. Palmer of Ocala, and by her three sons: Fred Jr. (Madonna) of Chapel Hill, NC: and Michael and Stephen Swindal of Tampa. She is also survived by grandchildren Haley, Stephen, Emily and Palmer, many nieces and nephews, and her former daughter-in-law, Jennifer Steinbrenner Swindal.

Mrs. Swindal performed many years of volunteer service as a social worker. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for Women, The National Society of Colonial Dames in America - Tampa Town Committee, St. John’s Episcopal Church, and a sustaining member of the Junior League of Tampa.

The family wishes to express their appreciation for the comfort and care given by the staff of Canterbury Towers through the many years of her residency there.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, April 1 at St. John’s Episcopal Church at 902 S. Orleans Avenue in Tampa, followed by a private graveside service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Childrens’ Home of Tampa, or a charity of choice.
