Virginia Slusark, 91, passed away peacefully with family at her side on February 19, 2014 at Wesley Acres in Des Moines, IA, after living a very happy and rewarding life. Virginia was born on June 3, 1922, in Newark, NJ to John McCann and Katherine Walker. She graduated from Newark's Eastside High and Delehanty Business School, and took a job as a telephone operator at New Jersey Bell. Virginia was born on June 3, 1922, in Newark, NJ to John McCann and Katherine Walker. She graduated from Newark's Eastside High and Delehanty Business School, and took a job as a telephone operator at New Jersey Bell. She often said her favorite part of the job was patching through overseas calls from soldiers during World War II, and letting them talk a little bit longer even though their time was up.

She met one of those soldiers, Stan Slusark, in 1942 at her brother Jerry's future wife's house, and they engaged in a "correspondence romance" while he was serving overseas. Virginia and Stan married on August 25, 1945, in St. Aloysius Church in Newark, and eventually settled in Bloomfield, NJ. Stan and Virginia were blessed with two children, Art in 1956 and Frank in 1958.

Virginia and Stan shared a strong Catholic faith, and were very active in Sacred Heart Church in Bloomfield, particularly the Knights of Columbus and the Rosary Society. They spent 40 wonderful years together in New Jersey full of great times with family and friends. They loved a good party, and were quite the dancers, particularly the polka, jitterbug and cha-cha.

In 1985, Virginia and Stan retired to Smyrna, DE, where they were very active in volunteer circles, particularly with St. Polycarp Church, the Military Order of the Purple Heart, and Delaware Home and Hospital. One of their highest honors was being selected as the Grand Marshalls of the Smyrna Fourth of July parade. They were also doting grandparents, driving often to Maryland and New Jersey to visit their grandchildren.

Virginia and Stan relocated to Fort Myers, FL in 2007, before moving to Johnston, IA in 2011 to be closer to family. During their time in Iowa they made many friends at Martina Place Assisted Living in Johnston, and most recently at Wesley Acres in Des Moines.

Virginia is survived by her husband, Stan, the love of her life. She is lovingly remembered by her son, Art and his wife, Nell of Johnston and their children, Kate (Patrick) Kiely of New York City, Jane of Des Moines and Mike of Chicago; and her son Frank, his wife Karen, and their children, Brian and Matt, all of Lake Hopatcong, NJ. She was preceded in death by her brother Gerald.

The families would like to thank the staffs at Martina Place, Bishop Drumm and Wesley Acres for making Virginia's later years happy and comfortable.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, expressions of remembrance can be made in Virginia's memory to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, c/o St. Polycarp's Church, 135 Ransom Lane, Smyrna, Delaware 19977. Cards can be sent to Ankeny Funeral Home at 1510 W. 1st Street, Ankeny, IA to be forwarded to Virginia's family.
