Vivian Elaine York was born in Oak Lawn, Illinois, a small suburb of Chicago, on October 27, 1928. She attended Elementary School in Oak Lawn and graduated from Calumet High School in Chicago in 1946. She worked at several jobs with technical companies, culminating as secretary to the head of the Electronics Department at the Argonne National Laboratory outside Chicago. There she met Warren Birge, and they were married on November 18, 1950. The couple moved to Baltimore, Maryland in 1951 and their first child was born there in 1952. During this time Warren was completing his degree at Johns Hopkins, and Vivian supported him tirelessly. The effort she put forth in maintaining a home, typing papers, preparing for childbirth and raising a newborn was typical of her unselfish support of family throughout their entire married life. By 1957, the family had grown to four and, after moving to Winter Park, shortly became five. Always adventurous, Vivian quickly agreed, two years later, to move to Palo Alto, California, when the opportunity arose. The family enjoyed California for a little over a year but soon found they had sand in their shoes and returned to Florida. Some years later a precious afterthought was added and the family became six. Vivian enjoyed boating, hiking, and long bicycle treks. She also loved to photograph her grandchildren and make custom greeting cards for family and friends. Vivian is survived by her husband, Warren, her children Linda, Stephen, Kenneth and Sheryl, her grandchildren Kenneth, Kiah, Kristin, Cody, Gracie, Christopher, Sophie, and Chloe, and her great-grandchildren Haley and Ryan. To her husband and her family, Vivian was a faithful wife, a loving mother, and a best friend.
Services will be held at noon Tuesday, April 7, at Baldwin-Fairchild Altamonte West, SR436 and Weathersfield Ave.
