Vivian St.Onge Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 1, 2014.

Auburn - Vivian (Vickie) St.Onge, 54, of Greene passed away Friday, February 28 after a three year battle against Breast Cancer at Hospice House in Auburn. Vivian was born August 13, 1959 in Lewiston, the daughter of late Omer and Yolande Rodrigue. An alumni of Lewiston High School, she married Daniel St.Onge in 1979 at Holy Cross Church in Lewiston. They built their home together in Greene where they have lived since 1985. Vivian lived every moment in the present and served as an inspiration to others to chase their goals and dreams. She lived her dream through the lives she touched and the breadth of her service to our community as a small business owner, Holy Family Church Youth Group leader, was elected as a Maine State Representative from the 64th District during the 115th and 116th Legislature, and worked as a lobbyist. She pivoted to the medical field after going back for her degree at CMMC College of Nursing and worked as an acute care nurse at St. Mary's and later as an oncology nurse at CMMC, both hospitals in Lewiston. When she spoke of her life ambitions, her character and desire to connect with people her feelings were captured when she admitted, "I miss politics, but I miss my patients more". Vivian was a strong, resilient, caring, and beautiful person. She was very involved as a community advocate/fundraiser, an artist of many sorts, and an outdoor/athletic enthusiast. She was a woman on a move with a mission whether it was her next educational goal, fundraising goal, or sewing project. She was a veteran of the Trek Across Maine, Tour de Cure and many other charity rides. Vivian raised tens of thousands of dollars for the American Lung Association of Maine, the American Diabetes Association, and the Patrick Dempsey Center for Hope and Healing. Vivian and her husband enjoyed their time with family and friends enjoying the outdoors cycling, camping, kayaking, and cross country skiing. She is survived by her loving husband of 34 years, Dan St.Onge; daughter, Deanna Pleskach and her husband, Ryan, a granddaughter, Eleanor of Syracuse, NY; son Eric St.Onge with Shannon Gordon, a grandson, Luke, of Sanford, sisters Susan Donovan and her husband Al of Greene; Kathy Jacques and her husband Mike of Austin, TX; Theresa Pushard with her family of Gardner; brother Carl Rodrigue and his wife Cathy of Chandler, AZ; many nieces and nephews; her golden retriever Anika; and the countless lives she touched. She and her family express their sincere gratitude to her medical teams and volunteers at CMMC, Parkview Hospital, and the Androscoggin Hospice House for their endless care, support, and compassion.

Valarie Audet

it was a pleasure to take care of Vivian. She is a special person and always makes everyone smile and laugh. If some day I become sick with cancer or something else, I hope to go through it with just as many laughs and smiles. Thank you Vivan for teaching me and others that cancer doesn't have to control you. I also hope to be as good as a mom, and friend as you.
Lots of love,

Vivian was an amazing person, if it wasnt for her my mother would have never made it through her struggle with cancer herself. They battled together, laughed together, cried together. Vivian was a strong and incredable woman who touched so many lives and brought so many smiles during dark times. She will be truely missed and was truely loved. Condolences sent to her family during this hard time. Prayers and love sent.

Vivian you were a force of nature. You changed us, those who loved you. You made us better, stronger. You're unconditional love, acceptance, and celebration of who we are was the rarest of gifts. Your belief in what we could do and accomplish was unbelievable and I swear you helped make our goals a reality by that strong belief you had in us. Your encouragement was almost tangible. It was sheer will that moved mountains and made all of us feel so special and so loved. You are loved. You are so special. You are so missed. So very, very missed. Our pain is so great because your impact was so great. It is your strength and your fierceness that gives me comfort. The knowledge that you changed our very souls and that as our pain heals you will always be with us. You will continue to spread your light through us because you made us better people who will go out and do good. You would demand it. You would demand that we live, and that we live fiercely. That we embrace life on a daily basis. None of use would dare deny you, but we all can use a little guidance and some of that fierce encouragement. So while you're up there in heaven, take a moment and continue to give us a push along our paths. We won't ever stop needing you. Or loving you. Always loving you...

Dan and Family, Dave and I were sorry to hear of Vivian's death. We were glad to have known her and regret that it was for only a brief time. As a physician, Dave enjoyed the privilege of working with Vivian and admired her skill as a nurse. As an oncologist, he only wishes Vivian had had a better outcome from her cancer treatment. Please accept our heartfelt sympathy. Also know that we are thinking of you.

What a wonderful human being the world has lost. I have such fond memories of Viv during the short time I came to know her as one of her caregivers. Weekly I would admire her earrings but truly it was the woman who wore them I admired the most. She is an inspiration to those whose lives she touched. Thinking of those she left behind. Best- Sue Mandell

Life is like the span of a day.

All is bright during the light of day, just like life.
Emotions abound of all kinds, joy and laughter, sadness and anger.
So does crying to release the pain of loss or anger, but also at joy and happiness.

Grief is like the darkest night.

Everything is black, there is no light to guide your way.
As with the night, given a little time, you start to notice sight is slowly returning and the night is no longer as dark and black.
When you see the midnight blue, night is starting to lessen.

As time moves on, grief will eventually lessen and the light of life will return.
It will be a different day where happiness, sadness, joy and anger can again be felt.
The memories of those no longer with us will be a part of us forever.
Rest in peace, Vivian.

Deanna & family-

You are in my thoughts as you are now forced to cherish your mother through memory and your own accomplishments. I want you to know your mom was present at a school board hearing I spoke at in high school- she could tell that I struggled with the situation & felt outcasted .... until this one woman stopped me before I left and told me how proud she was of me to stand and speak for myself in such an intimidating environment. As an adult, I look back on that moment, that long stretch of adolescent hardship and your mom reaching her hands and her voice out to me from the crowd, is something I have reflected back on for years.... and I will continue to do so for years to come. In loving reflection, Erin.

Thank you, Vivian, for the love, laughter, heartfelt talks, cycle rides, snowball fights, random dancing, crazy diving competitions at Mary's pool, decadent chocolate desserts, spontaneous French lessons, fashion tips, flashing light and bling-encrusted silliness, getting glittered at Disney, and inspiring me to keep writing music. Thank you for loving my song "Chairs" and being such an amazing supporter of The Dempsey Center and a great Board member of the Short Folks For Hope Foundation. It was a wonderful, bittersweet joy to sing you the song you inspired and I wrote for you...and to know how much you loved it, too, and want to share it. I think of your smiling face and it warms my heart. I'm so blessed that Mary introduced us...three years of your friendship is better than a lifetime without knowing you. As you have always said, "Feel the squeeze," and we know will see you again. Heartfelt hugs and prayers for you, Dan, Deanna, Eric, Luke and the family. You are dear to our hearts. To Vivian's family: I am surprised and saddened to see of Your loss.
Vivian used to stop by and chat years ago at my office at SMRMC. We shared a love of Golden Retrievers. She brought her dog in to see me and overlooked my spoiling her!
Later as I was a seriously ill patent, she took care of me at night at SMRMC. I was so impressed with her knowledge, dedication and passion. She was my favorite nurse. To know her was truly to love her.
Again so sorry for your loss. Vivian was a true example of what a nurse should be. Sincere sympathy to all who loved and miss her.

To Dan & family,

Vance & Carole Davis

Vivian,
You were well aware of how much your friendship meant to Vance and I. I will always treasure them, and you will never be forgotten.

Dan, Deanna, and Eric;
If only I knew the words to say that would make Vivian's 'passing ok. Sadly I don't. However I will copy a poem that was sent to me when my big brother passed away in 98. I have painted it and framed it, and when I think of all my loved ones who no longer walk the earth beside us, I read this and it somehow seems to comfort my soul. It is my sincere wish that the poem will do the same for each of you.
MISS ME BUT LET ME GO
When I come to the end of the road
and the Sun has set for me,
I want no rites in a gloom-filled room!

Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little, but not to long
and not with your head bowed low;

Remember the love that we once shared
Miss me, but let me go.

For this is a journey we all must take.
And each must go alone.

It is all apart of the Master's plan-
A step on the road to home,

When you are lonely and sick at heart
Go to the friends we know.
And bury our sorrows in doing good deeds,

Miss me, but let me go...

author unknown

We love you guys and are in our hearts, thoughts and prayers during this very difficult and sad time for us. For our Miss Viv--she is at peace, no pain, and nothing stopping her from spreading her wings and taking off!!!!

I will miss everything about you! Our early morning chats when we could solve all the worlds problems before 7 am. The humor and tears we would share in that little 7ft by 7ft office. Over the past year I realized not to worry if my phone vibrated during the early morning it was likely you texting me before 6 to chat.. I will miss that time of the day. I will think of you with each snowflake that you loved so much. Your patients adored and missed you as I know you did them. You accomplished so much in this short time here on earth and over the past year strived to squeeze in a lifetime. We had several teary goodbyes over the past year but my last visit with you was a funny time of reminiscing at the bar of The Hospice House over a muffin. You were a true friend who would do anything for anyone that needed it before they even knew what it was they needed. You taught us how to dress sharp and to always accessorize appropriately. Your heart was pure gold and I know you are in a special place snapping your gum every time I sing too loud. I will never forget you. God Bless you Dan, Deanna, Erick and family.
