Dr. W. C. "Doc" Whitley, 89, passed away Sunday, March 30, 2014 at a local nursing facility. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday at Macon Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Sue DeJournett and the Rev. Rodney Body officiating. The family will meet friends from 6 – 8 p.m., Wednesday at Snow's Memorial Chapel, Pio Nono Avenue. They suggest that memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Central Georgia, 866 Mulberry Street, Macon 31201 or to the Methodist Home for Children and Youth, 304 Pierce Avenue, Macon 31204.
Dr. Whitley was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Alexander Whitley and was the son of the late Jack and Leary Farmer Whitley. Born in Bowden, GA, he had lived in Macon most of his life and was an alumnus of Mercer University, University of Georgia and Florida State University earning his Doctorate Degree in Education. An educator for more than thirty years, Dr. Whitley served as Principal of Dudley Hughes High School and Southwest High School. He was a National Officer in the National Education Association and the National Beta Club. He also served on Macon City Council for a number of years. Dr. Whitley was a longtime member of Southside United Methodist Church, a member of Fort Valley Masonic Lodge No. 110 and a member of Macon Optimist Club.
Survivors include his son, Terry (Jan Berry) Whitley; his daughters, Nina W. Talon and Heather M. (Chris Barrere) Sumowski; his grandchildren, M. Adrian (Holly L.) Patton, Amara E. Sumowski, and Elan A. Barrere; his great granddaughters, A. Kendall Patton and Morgan Little; his brother, Dexton R. Whitley.

Dr. Whitley made a lasting impression on many of the Southwest High School student body for a number of years, myself being one. He will forever be etched in my memories for the exceptional man he was. May he rest in peace!
