Wade J. 'Jim' Bayless, 89, died Wednesday August 27, 2014 in Merritt Island, Florida, in the care of hospice after a short illness. Jim was born on June 17, 1925 in Holden, West Virginia to Wade P. and Nina Leake Bayless, both of whom preceeded him in death. He was also preceeded in death by his wife of 53 years, Mary, and his grandson, Ben. He is survived by his 3 sons- John (Nancy) of Tampa, Paul (Debbie) of Washington DC, and Mark (Alice) of Merritt Island - and his grandchildren Wade, MaryHelen, Peter, Emily, Beth, James, Jonathon and Jaki. Wade J. 'Jim' Bayless, 89, died Wednesday August 27, 2014 in Merritt Island,
Florida, in the care of hospice after a short illness. Jim was born on June 17, 1925
in Holden, West Virginia to Wade P. and Nina Leake Bayless, both of whom
preceeded him in death. He was also preceeded in death by his wife of 53
years, Mary, and his grandson, Ben.
He is survived by his 3 sons- John (Nancy) of Tampa, Paul (Debbie) of
Washington DC, and Mark (Alice) of Merritt Island - and his grandchildren
Wade, MaryHelen, Peter, Emily, Beth, James, Jonathon and Jaki.
Jim moved to Florida with his family to Samoset at age 5, then Bradenton, and
finally Tampa, where he went to Oak Park, Franklin, and Hillsborough High
School, graduating in 1943.
He entered the Naval Air Corp and served in WWII. He then attended the
University of Florida on the GI Bill. He was called up again for Korea and stationed
in San Diego where he met and married Mary Long. They came to Brevard
County first in 1957 and permanently in 1964, first in Rockledge and then
West Cocoa. Jim worked for Convair/ General Dynamics at the Cape until
retirement.
He was active in Brevard County EOC helping with many hurricanes and
fire related emergencies. With Brevard Amateur Radio (BEARS) he helped
obtain and maintain an emergency radio communications vehicle. One of
the joys of his later life was the Monday morning gatherings with the men at his
house to maintain the equiptment.
Jim and Mary were longtime members of St. Mary's Catholic Church in
Rockledge, and more recently with Blessed Sacrament Church in Sharpes.
A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, August 30th at Blessed Sacrament
Catholic Church at 10:30am, followed by a reception in the church hall.
Donations may be made in Jim's memory to Vitas Hospice, 1100 S.
Courtenay Parkway, Merritt Island, Fl 32952.
