Published by Legacy Remembers on May 13, 2010.

Afghanistan- Specialist Wade A. Slack, 21, of Waterville, died from combat wounds inflicted by enemy mortar fire on Thursday May 6, 2010. He was born March 22, 1989, the son of Dr. Alan Slack and Mary Slack, and was brought up in Waterville, Maine. Educated in Waterville Schools and Graduated from Waterville High School Class of 2007. As a youngster, Wade was very involved in boy Scouts and played Little League in Waterville. He enjoyed doing all things outdoors, he especially loved hunting. An avid video gamer and collector of Movies on DVD. Specialist Slack was, and still is, a great power of example for all humanity. He was a totally unselfish, compassionate, and giving person to everyone he came into contact with, directly and indirectly. Specialist Slack died serving his country and his fellow soldiers. He is a true hero. All gave some and some gave all, Wade A. Slack gave all on May 6, 2010. And for this, he leaves behind a grateful nation.

Specialist Slack is survived by a grieving mother, Mary Slack whom he loved dearly, his father Dr. Alan Slack, stepmother Rose Slack, six brothers and sisters; Jonathan, Meghan, Lauren, Allison, Andrew, and Jesse and wife Mackenzie, a niece Riley who was the apple of Wades eye, step-sister Jessica Cook, step-brother Ethan Roderick. He is also survived by his special friends and "west coast parents" Dan and Mary Morse of Shelton, Washington, and many other relatives and friends. Wade will be sadly missed by all who knew him, especially fellow combat soldier Sergeant James Cribbett who was with Wade for his last journey home.

Visiting Hours will be held Saturday May 15, 2010 from 2-4PM and 7-9PM at Veilleux Funeral Home, 8 Elm Street, Waterville, Maine 04901. A Funeral Service will be held 2PM Sunday May 16, 2010 at Blessed Hope Advent Church, Pleasant Street, Waterville. I helped put together SPC Slacks memorial in Afghanistan, and I also wrote the obituary that went out in our battalion newsletter. He was greatly missed by many, even the special forces team who came in full uniform (a very rare occasion indeed) to the event. May his family find peace knowing that he is still remembered by an old soldier.

To the parents and family, I want you to know that you are not alone in the grief you are feeling. I know only too well what you are going through and what you will go through in the coming weeks and months ahead. You will have many questions as to why? You will have many things to get ready or go through and that should be done in time. Sometimes it just can’t be faced and that’s ok, for you will know when the time is right for you. Holidays make this harder to get through and you will find that celebrating birthdays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, Mother’s Day & Father’s Day will never be the same. The road isn’t easy that you are about to travel nor are all the books on grief going to map it out for you. It’s ok, just know that we are here for you and will not leave you. There is no right or wrong way to grieve. Grief is an individual journey, that unfortunately like my own self you now have to travel. It doesn’t matter how they died but how they lived that we should focus on. We know that each one in our military joined to make a difference in their own lives and to serve their country. Please know that each one no matter what is an American Hero and to be honored always and forever. I ask that God give the comfort, strength and courage that you are going to need. When and if the time is right for you please contact me. You can cry, vent, or just talk as only another person who has been where you are can really know what you are going through. May God continue to hold your hand as He gives comfort to you today and for the rest of your life. We also have a very active online support group for those who have died while active duty. You are welcome to join us as no one but those who have walked this path can even start to understand that grief.

I knew Wade for 4 years, my deepest apologies and sympathy for his family. I haven't received a email or a call from him in awhile. I am just now finding out about his passing, and I'm still in denial. Wade was one of the most amazing guys I ever had the honor to know. We had such long talks about absolutely nothing but at the same time everything. I remember the movie nights we had, I encouraged him to watch "A Walk To Remember" and in return he had me watch "Boondock Saints". I can't watch that movie without thinking of him. There will not be a day that goes by that I won't miss him. He was such a great friend and an incredible person. When I told him that I wanted to be an Elementary teacher but the pay sucked, he told me as long as I'm doing what I love all the rest shouldn't matter. I am now pursing my dream, just like he always inspired me to do. He was just one of those rare people that no matter what he would always be there for you. Heaven is lucky to have him as an angel. I know Randy Shughart and Gary Gordon welcomed him with open arms.
I will always love you Wade,
"Always a pleasure ;)"

Prayer for Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

My deepest sympathy to you. I am a Mom of a son serving in Iraq right now & although I do not know you or you're son, I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am about the loss of such a brave soldier. Although we are strangers our sons connect us in such a way that only those who have children serving during these trying times can really understand. Your son sounded like such a wonderful person whom I'm sure left you with many happy memories.
Sincerely, Candace Dieterich

It has been almost a month since Mary Slack (Wades Mom) called my family to tell us of Wades death. I have spent the last 30 minutes reading all of the entries in this guest book. My wife and I are (not were) Wades west coast parents. To all who have written we say thank you, Wade truly was an Extaordinary, Brave young man. We miss him everyday. For those who never met him I am truly sorry, for I know you would have been better for it. To Mary, Alan, Rose and all his siblings know that we love you all and share your pain now and forever.

We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of Spc. Slack and we honor his distinguished service to the cause of freedom and liberty. Sadly, America has lost one of its finest heroes, the U.S. has lost a friend and protector, and a family has lost an example of character and courage, which they will love and respect forever. Today, because of the sacrifice Spc. Slack has made, the house of freedom is stronger, sturdier, and more secure.

To the family and friends, of Spc. Slack I would like you to know that a lot of people pray for you, and my hope is that their prayers will give you the strength necessary to carry on. Just as you were always with him when he was deployed overseas, know that he will always be with you wherever you may be. In the days to follow, may you be strengthened by the fact that Sgt. Slack was a man distinguished by exceptional courage and will always be admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. You, your family and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

"Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid, they have earned our undying gratitude. America will never, ever forget their sacrifices."

Spc. Slack the flag of the United States of America has your blood sewn into the fabric; it shall forever wave in your honor.

Freedom requires sacrifice the protected will never know.

May 29, 2010

To the Family and Friends of Spc. Wade Slack.

Please accept the sincere condolences for the loss of your son.

It is hard to find the words that will remove the hurt you must feel. (There is none) But, please take note that his death is not in vain, and it has not gone unnoticed from the eyes of God. For at Psalms 116:15 he said: "Precious in the eyes of God is the death of his loyal ones." He has seen what war and death has done to families and friends.

For that reason I wanted to share a few words of encouragement from the Bible:

I hope that you can draw some comfort from the following scriptures:

Isaiah 25:8: "He will actually swallow up death forever, and the Sovereign Lord will certainly wipe the tears form all faces. And he will take it away from all the earth, for I have said it."

John 5:28, 29:... There is going to be a resurrection of the dead.

Rev. 21:4:...."And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."

God has not left us, from the beginning he as set into motion, a plan to end all wars. (at his due time)

I hope that these few words brings comfort and hope and strengthen your faith, that God see and will fulfill his promises.

May 29, 2010

To the Family and Friends of SPC.Wade Slack,

I am deeply sorry for the sudden lose of such a brave young man like Wade.
I viewed the picture slide show, it was heart warming,he looked like a great kid.
At this difficult time many the family hold on to the many wonderful memories he must have made over the years.
Psalm 147:3-"He is healing the broken-hearted ones, and is binding up their painful spots".

You can feel that Death can leave a heartache that nothing can heal, just know that Love can leave a memory that no one can steal.

To the family of Wade Slack. I would like to extend my sincere sympathies, and I am grateful to have learned about his extremely courageous actions to save others. We have wonderful promises in the Bible that soon there will be no more pain, suffering , but the earth will be made once again into a Paradise, and we will see our loved ones here on earth again. Until that time, may this hope sustain and comfort you. I pray that this will bring you a measure of peace in your hearts.

A Veteran -
whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it.

I know there are no words to say at this time, except how sorry that I am. I truly feel your loss and pain. My thoughts and prayers are with you always. Wade will never be forgotten.

For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed

But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

For those missing in action;
for those who didn’t make it home.
I know you’re in God’s presence you are not alone.
For every neatly folded flag;
for every shattered family
I will do the only thing I know to dignify your memory.

I salute you, allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
my humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.

I salute you .

I'm deply saddened to hear of SPC Slack's death. I knew him as we went through EOD school together and have to say that he was one of the best I had under my command, as I was his class NCOIC. Wade never gave me any problems but always knew how to make and old Sgt laugh. He always kept me on my toes and I'll never forget. For you, his family, I will always remember you because of him. You raised a wonderful person and the world will be less of a place without his upbeat and cheerful personality to light it. I'm sorry for your loss and on behalf of his EOD brothers and sisters we will keep him in our hearts and minds for eternity. " What we do in life echoes in eternity" EOD! TSgt C. McCrackin, USAF EOD

For the Commander, Carroll R. Michaud

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to our Brother-in-Arm SPC. Wade Slack. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Wade. And to Wade it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country while opposing enemy forces in Afghanistan. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Wade, you are a brave American Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,353 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Wade’s family and loved ones.

Dr and Mrs Slack, My deepest sympathy is sent to you. My son Spec. Robert Golden is with the 173rd. He is now home for r and r. While in Kuwait he assisted with the ceremony so to speak for your son. Robert said it was a difficult thing for him to do, more so than when his vehicle was hit with an IED. His and my deepest sympathies are with you and family.

I knew Wade when he worked at the Last Unicorn, as has become a family tradition for most of the Slack children. He was so quiet, but always ready with an endearing smile, and a great, dry wit. We are all the better just for knowing him. We extend our deepest sympathies to you all during this most unbelievable and horrible hour. May God Bless you all, and know that Wade will always live in our hearts.

He stood up
He showed up
He stepped forward
He raised his right hand
He stood in the gap

He walked in the fire
He did not run
He did not hide
He did not dodge
He did not evade

Consequently...
He had nothing to prove
No one to convince

Those who matter already know

Those who don't never will
