Obituary

Walter Wesley Childers, 93, passed away Friday, October 18, 2013. He was born in Taft, Texas, August 17, 1920, to Clara and Walter Whittle Childers.  He married Ura Lea Harwell, August 10, 1940, and made their home in Taft.   Walter served in the Army during World War II in the 807 TD (Tank Destroyer) Battalion. He worked as the shop foreman for  Tom Reding Company where he retired after forty years of service. Walter was a former Taft Volunteer Firefighter and served as Fire Chief. Upon retiring he and Ura Lea moved to Yoakum, Texas, where he enjoyed gardening and continued to work on John Deere mowers in Shiner,...


Walter Wesley Childers, 93, passed away Friday, October 18, 2013. He was born in Taft, Texas, August 17, 1920, to Clara and Walter Whittle Childers.  He married Ura Lea Harwell, August 10, 1940, and made their home in Taft.



 



Walter served in the Army during World War II in the 807 TD (Tank Destroyer) Battalion. He worked as the shop foreman for  Tom Reding Company where he retired after forty years of service. Walter was a former Taft Volunteer Firefighter and served as Fire Chief. Upon retiring he and Ura Lea moved to Yoakum, Texas, where he enjoyed gardening and continued to work on John Deere mowers in Shiner, Texas.



 



His parents, his wife, and his brother, Robert Eugene Childers, preceded him in death.



 



Walter is survived by two sons, Gary (Alice) of George West, Texas, Walter Eugene “Gene” (Delia) of Corpus Christi, Texas;  five grandchildren, John Wesley (Tammy) Childers of Taft, Scott (Roxanne) Childers of Corpus Christi, Lora Lea (Gene) Geffert of George West, Holli (Clayton) McCall of Artesia New Mexico, Gena Childers of Hallettsville, Texas; eight great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Lola Mae Wilke of Corpus Christi, Texas; and brother-in-law, Richard Hemmel of Dallas, Texas.



 



Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 22, 2013, from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Colonial Funeral Home Chapel.  Funeral Service will be Wednesday, October 23, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Taft.  Interment will follow the service at The Palms Memorial Gardens.  Arrangements entrusted to Colonial Funeral Home.
