Obituary

Walter P. Long Jr. – born in Everett, MA August 23, 1929 to parents Walter P. Long Sr. and Greta (Lawson) Long. He graduated from Everett High School in 1947. Walter proudly served in the United States Coast Guard before and during the Korean conflict from 1948 to 1953 as Radioman 1st class aboard the USCGC Matagorda (WAVP-373). He was honorably discharged in 1953 and joined the Cambridge Fire Department in 1954. During his career as a Firefighter in Cambridge Massachusetts, he was assigned to station 7 in Kendall Sq. Walter P. Long Jr. – born in Everett, MA August 23, 1929 to parents Walter P. Long Sr. and Greta (Lawson) Long. He graduated from Everett High School in 1947. Walter proudly served in the United States Coast Guard before and during the Korean conflict from 1948 to 1953 as Radioman 1st class aboard the USCGC Matagorda (WAVP-373). He was honorably discharged in 1953 and joined the Cambridge Fire Department in 1954.
During his career as a Firefighter in Cambridge Massachusetts, he was assigned to station 7 in Kendall Sq. His promotion to Lieutenant provided the opportunity to move to Headquarters station 1 hear Harvard Sq, and he lead a crew on the Rescue Squad for 29 years. His last assignment at the CFD was served at Ladder 4 on Sherman Street.
Walter also served as an Emergency medical Technician instructor and as a Massachusetts state examiner / Program coordinator. There are many alive today because of the things he did or taught others to do.
Walter retired from his 34 year service for the fire department in 1988. He and his wife then moved to Tucson, served a brief tour at the Corona De Tucson Fire department as a Volunteer Firefighter, and later moving cars between Tucson and Phoenix for AVIS rent a car.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara (Goodwin) formerly of Rochester NH, Son James and wife Lisa (Melvin) Long, Daughters Karen Long, and Susan (Long) Spalla Husband Lane. He was preceded in death by son Steven Long who died at birth. He has five grand children, Amy Long, Kimberly Long, Leland Long, Austin Spalla, and Alexis Spalla.
There will be a public viewing at East Lawn Cemetery Chapel 5801 East Grant Road, Tucson, AZ on Monday evening, October 29th, 2012 from 6pm to 8pm. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 on Tuesday, October 30th, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church 8051 E Broadway Blvd
Tucson, AZ.
