Dr. McCoy was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama and was educated in Birmingham Public schools. He earned his BS degree at age 19, and MA degrees from Birmingham Southern College, and MD degree from Tulane University in 1940, with post-graduate work at Harvard Medical School. In the middle of the Great Depression, he taught for 3 years in the Secondary School of Cullman County before enrolling in Medical School. For more than 40 years he practiced internal medicine in Birmingham, and was active on the staff of South Highland Infirmary, Brookwood Hospital, Baptist Montclair, UAB and St. Vincent's. He served as President of St. Vincent's medical staff and was on the teaching staff of UAB for several years. He also served as President of the Birmingham Clinical Club and President and founding member of the Birmingham Society of Internists. He was certified by the American College of Physicians and was a Fellow and Life member. He was also a member of the Medical Association of the State of Alabama and the Jefferson County Medical Society. In World War II he served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, rising to the rank of Major. He continued in his 90's to serve the community by visiting members of his church who were patients at St. Vincent's, Baptist Montclair, and St. Martin's-in-the-Pines. He brought his wonderful sense of humor to the patients to cheer them up and it really made their day to know he continued to remember them long after they had been his patients. He also continued to call them on their birthdays many years after he retired. He loved his family, and traveling with his beloved wife, D'Anne, reading and sculpting and was a proficient rock mason. He modeled in clay since adolescence, and sculpted the heads of several family members, as well as members of his church. He was an avid fisherman and collector of coins, stamps and Audubon Havell prints. Along with D'Anne, he was a most generous benefactor of many local charities, including UAB, Birmingham Southern, and St. Vincent's Hospital.
