Walter R. Payne, age 85, of Lakewood, passed away on Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at his residence. He was born on April 30, 1928 in Jersey City, NJ, and was the son of the late Gertrude and Walter Payne. Walter was raised in Jersey City, and he was a former resident of Avenel and Linden, before moving to Lakewood 10 years ago. Walter was a US Navy Veteran of World War II and a member of the Avenel V.F.W. Post 7164. He was a multitalented commercial artist with a career spanning 30 years before his retirement in 1981. In addition to managing his own firm, Mercury Advertising, he worked for Impact Exhibits in South Plainfield, NJ. Walter was an avid fisherman and published cartoonist in the Keys Reporter newspaper in Tavernier, FL. He was a member of the North Jersey Wood Carvers Association. Loving husband of the late Virginia Payne, he is survived by his children, Kenneth R. Payne and his wife Diane of Brielle, NJ, and Barbara A. Smith of Lakewood, NJ; and his grandchildren, Sean R. Payne and Nicole J. Payne of Brielle, NJ. Visitation will be Sunday from 12 to 2 p.m. at the D'Elia Funeral Home, 1300 Vermont Ave., Lakewood, NJ 08701. Cremation will follow at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Veterans Association of America, Inc., P.O.
