Walter H. Winkeljohn, 96, died Monday in Roswell, Ga. He was born in St. Henry, Ohio on October 2, 1917, the eleventh child of Matt and Rosina Winkeljohn. He lived in Celina, Ohio during his high school years and was on the basketball team of Immaculate Conception High School. He was a 1940 graduate of the University of Dayton where he also played basketball for four years and played in the NIT his senior year. Commissioned upon graduation, he reported in 1940 to the yet to be named Keesler Field as one of the first officers reporting. Walter H. Winkeljohn, 96, died Monday in Roswell, Ga. He was born in St. Henry, Ohio on October 2, 1917, the eleventh child of Matt and Rosina Winkeljohn. He lived in Celina, Ohio during his high school years and was on the basketball team of Immaculate Conception High School. He was a 1940 graduate of the University of Dayton where he also played basketball for four years and played in the NIT his senior year. Commissioned upon graduation, he reported in 1940 to the yet to be named Keesler Field as one of the first officers reporting.

In February 1943, he married his secretary, Marjory Lopez Yerger, at Nativity BVM Church. After D-Day he was sent to Italy leaving his wife and baby daughter in Biloxi. He was released from active duty and moved his growing family to Ohio, where he joined his brother in an auto parts business which spread to three cities in the state. In 1959 he returned to the gulf coast. With four children he and Marjory settled in Ocean Springs. After 59 years of marriage, Marjory died in 2002, but he remained in his home of 46 years until it was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. He tried to remain in Ocean Springs but then moved to Melbourne, Florida, and in 2009 metropolitan Atlanta. Since 2011, he has resided at St. George Village in Roswell, Georgia,

He is survived by daughter Julie Collins of Satellite Beach, Florida, his son Jim and his wife, Tami, of Indian Harbour Beach, Florida, his son Steve and his wife, Mary, of Johns Creek, Georgia, and his daughter Michele Laird, and her husband, Ken of Valparaiso, Florida. His survivors also include ten grandchildren and twenty eight great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Peter Chanel Catholic Church in Roswell, Georgia at 2:00 PM on Friday, June 13, 2014 AD. A reception for family and friends will follow.
