Obituary

Mr. Warren Charles Brown, Sr., a long-time resident of Deer Park, L.I., New York, died Tuesday, July 30, 2013 in the caring warmth of his family at his home. Mr. Brown was born and raised in Brooklyn. As a young adult, he worked as a bus driver. On one of his trips, he took the fare of a lovely young lady and she caught his eye - the former Alice Odell.

On one of his trips, he
took the fare of a lovely young lady and she caught his eye - the former Alice Odell. On one of these trips, he offered her chocolate - a favorite of his. That offer of chocolate led to a life-long and loving relationship; as they married in 1939 in Merrick. Just this past February, he and Alice celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary. Warren and Alice raised their family of seventeen children with love and respect that has resounded in each of their children's lives.

Warren was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. In his years of work, he was a chauffeur in the trucking industry, retiring from Island Transportation. He was a devoted parishioner of Ascension Lutheran Church of Deer Park, serving in many beloved capacities. He was an Usher, and donated time to driving other congregants to personal appointments and church outings.

At home on Hawthorne Street, Warren was lovingly known as "the Mayor". Beloved by anyone he met, he was always available to help where help was needed. In winter he would be out snowblowing neighbor's driveways, and at any time brought in neighbor's trash cans off the street. His family was his priority, but some of his favorite pasttimes were tending and growing his garden, watching truck and train videos, and attending local train shows.

One notable event in Warren's life is his status as the last surviving witness to Charles' Lindbergh's famous take-off at the dirt runway of Roosevelt Field of his plane the "Spirit of St. Louis" in 1927. He was nine years old at the time. He was a member of the Lindbergh Foundation and was recently honored with a certificate at the last gathering honoring Mr. Lindbergh.

In addition to his beloved Alice, Warren is survived by his children - Patricia Rizzuto, Gary Brown, Warren C. Brown, Jr., Carol Fulkerson, Edward Brown, Charles Brown, Richard Brown, Lynn Hopkins, Raymond Brown, Darlene Brown, Donald Brown, Deborah Callara, Steven Brown, Bonnel Tormey, Lee "Penny" Brown, Janice Harms and Sandra Varriale. He is a cherished Grandpa and Pop-Pops to forty-eight grandchildren, seventy-three great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday, August 1, from 2-4:00 and 7-9:00 p.m. Pastor Justin Lathrop of Ascension Lutheran Church will offer the funeral service at 8:00 p.m. that evening. On Friday morning at 10:00 a.m., Pastor Justin will conduct morning prayers, and the cortege will process to Pinelawn Memorial Park in Farmingdale.

In lieu of flowers, the family would request remembrances be made in Warren's name to Good Shepherd Hospice at www.goodshepherdhospice.net, or to the Healthwell Foundation, at P.O. Box 4133, Gaithersburg, M.D. 20885-4133, or www.healthwellfoundation.org
