J. Wayne Baker, 81, born August 25, 1933, died September 1, 2014 at home under the care of Community Hospice of Northeast Florida. He was born in Hamilton, Ohio, to Broadus and Lucille (Hall) Baker. He graduated from Hamilton High School in 1951. He received a BA from Murray State in 1957, a MA in Library Science from Indiana University in 1966. He was a 2nd Lt. for 2 years active duty in the Army, serving 16 months in Korea in 1957-58 and then four years in reserves, achieving the rank of Captain. J. Wayne Baker, 81, born August 25, 1933, died September 1, 2014 at home under the care of Community Hospice of Northeast Florida. He was born in Hamilton, Ohio, to Broadus and Lucille (Hall) Baker. He graduated from Hamilton High School in 1951. He received a BA from Murray State in 1957, a MA in Library Science from Indiana University in 1966. He was a 2nd Lt. for 2 years active duty in the Army, serving 16 months in Korea in 1957-58 and then four years in reserves, achieving the rank of Captain. He taught school for five years in Kentucky and Indiana before becoming Library Director of the Owensboro, Kentucky public library. He was associate director of the library in Evansville, Indiana, for two years before becoming Library Director at Ohio Northern University for 16 years in Ada, Ohio. He spent 15 years at Florida State College in Jacksonville, retiring in 1998. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Beverley Leeper Baker, three children; Carole Elizabeth (Steve) Brace, Ft. Wayne, IN, Bradley Wayne (Noreen) Baker and Scott David (Melissa) Baker, Jacksonville. Two grandchildren, Dr. Michael (Heather) Brace, Zionsville, Indiana; Katherine Brace, Orlando, FL; Two great-grandchildren Ethan and Evan Brace, Zionsville; a sister Sylvia Behrens, Hamilton, and a brother Broadus (Carolyn) Baker, Fairfield, OH. A step-granddaughter, Rachel Schreier, step-granddaughter Jordan Gandy and a step-great-grandson, Micah Broadwater. He was a member of Boone Park tennis, Du-Bol Winnies camping club, Retiree's Club of FSCJ, an avid reader, liked golf and watching the Jags. He was also a member of Unity Church of Jacksonville, loved to sing and sang in the choir for years, including solos. He loved his little dogs, Daisy Mae and Dolly Sue. A memorial service will be held Friday, September 5, 2014 at 11:30 am at Hardage-Giddens Town & Country Funeral Home, 7242 Normandy Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32205 with visitation one hour before the service with interment following at Riverside Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Jacksonville Public Library, c/o Resource Development Office, Attn: Pam McClellan, 303 Laura St. N., Jacksonville, FL 32202.
