WAYNE WITT BATES (AGE 94) He was born on August 19, 1922 in Texaco, New Mexico. He had eight brothers and two sisters who preceded him in death. During World War II he served in the U.S. Coast Guard aboard USS Mosley DE-321. After the war, he was employed by the Department of the Army (Signal Corps), at both Fort Sam Houston, TX and the Pentagon in Washington, DC. He and his wife moved from Texas to Fairfax County, Virginia in 1955. They lived in Fairfax City from 1955 until 1987, before moving to Centreville, VA. He was born on August 19, 1922 in Texaco, New Mexico. He had eight brothers and two sisters who preceded him in death. During World War II he served in the U.S. Coast Guard aboard USS Mosley DE-321. After the war, he was employed by the Department of the Army (Signal Corps), at both Fort Sam Houston, TX and the Pentagon in Washington, DC. He and his wife moved from Texas to Fairfax County, Virginia in 1955. They lived in Fairfax City from 1955 until 1987, before moving to Centreville, VA. In recognition of his research, he was duly elected “Honorary” member of both the United Transportation Union (UTU), and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers (BLE). In 1971, he was one of the founders of the Bates Family of Old Virginia. Further, he was recognized as an authority in regard to the Witt-Whitt ancestry, with much original research and published articles. He is survived by his wife, Rose, and his two sons, Dr. David Bates of Newtown, PA, and son Bill Bates and Darleen of Fairfax, VA and their son Billy Magee. He is also survived by his two other grandchildren, Carley Hovermale and David Linden Bates of Richmond, VA, the children of deceased son Frank Bates.
