Wayne Menzel, 81, died Sunday, March 23, 2014 from two forms of blood disease. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at McLaren's Chapel. A Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Douglas Avenue Presbyterian Church in Des Moines.

Wayne was born on a farm near McCallsburg, IA to Lester and Lucy (Densmore) Menzel. After graduating from McCallsburg High School he attended Luther College, spent two years in the U.S. Army and earned a degree from the University of Iowa. While at Iowa he met Lois Jacoby and they were married in 1958. Wayne's first job was with the Bankers Life Company in Des Moines. In 1960 he began working for Meredith Corporation in Des Moines, retiring in 1995 after 35 years.

Along the way, Wayne and Lois had two children, Scott and Paula. Family vacations were spent in Gunnison County Colorado, hiking, fishing and seeing old friends. As empty nesters, Wayne and Lois took bicycle trips in Europe and small ship cruises to Alaska and Central America. An avid bicyclist, Wayne participated in several RAGBRAI rides as well as the Iowa 150. He was also an avid fisherman and enjoyed fly fishing and fly-in trips to Canada. Wayne and Lois were members of Douglas Avenue Presbyterian Church for many years. Wayne was a charter member of the Clive Lions Club and served many offices including president and treasurer. He also volunteered for many years with SHIIP.

Wayne is survived by his daughter, Paula (Paul) Hartmann; and grandchildren, Eric and Lucy. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lois; and son, Scott.

The family would like to thank Dr. Schreck and Dr. Buroker and their nurses for the kindness and expert care throughout his illness.

Memorials may be sent to the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation or the John Stoddard Cancer Center.
