I remember Wayne very fondly. I worked with him many years ago at South Meck. He was one of the warmest, kindest people I've ever known. He always had a ready smile for everyone who came in contact with him....one of the truly "good guys."

I grew up with Wayne and Greg Schultz. There are no finer people in the world. Wayne was a great High School coach and teacher and I know he impacted countless lives. He was also our community swimming pool manager. He was dedicated and ran a great club that was safe and secure for families and for children. Wayne and Greg were avid motorcycle riders and I have great memories of them riding together. I used to go to Wayne's home and play ping-pong with Greg and it was always so much fun. Wayne taught me a great deal about hard work, honesty and doing your absolute best no matter what the job. I am sorry that I missed the obituary and the opportunity to pay my respect to such a great man. My family will keep Greg and Wayne's family in their prayers.

Wayne was part of the family. Mom Evelyn Fager would say "shirt tail" relation. His Mom, Violet, was a sister to Uncle Harley Motter who was married to my Dad, Donald Fager's, sister Ardis. After Violet died Wayne's Dad Elmer married my Grandmother Amelia, Millie, Fager's sister Maude. She was my Great Aunt. See I told you we were related, I would see Wayne at some of the family gatherings. He was tall and handsome. Greg wanted to let you know I have been thinking of you. Hugs Brad has my number.

Mr. Schultz's days as an educator at South Meck will never be forgotten. (Hebrews 6:10) . . . "For God is not unrighteous so as to forget your work and the love you showed for his name..."

Mr. Schultz,

He was a great teacher whom I had the delight to be his student. He was always someone that you could go and talk to when feeling down and he would find some way to make you smile and laugh. His stories would always crack you up with the things he would do, like getting on the roof to catch smokers or adjusting his blinds in his room so people couldn't see in but he could see out to catch the smokers. His dedication was to the students and no one could deny that. He always had a joke that sometimes you would just have to tell him "that is a Mr. Schultz joke." He was a teacher that I will always remember and he helped to make me who I am today. He will be greatly missed and I wish I could have told him thank you one more time for everything. He was filled with South Meck Sabre Pride.

I was the Principal at South Mecklenburg for 5 years in the 1990s and I remember Wayne as a great teacher with a generous spirit. He always had a kind word to say about his colleagues, and he really liked, and got along well with our students.

He operated the school store, coached, and made it his business to keep students and staff safe. I remember chasing some trespassers who had broken into several cars, and from out of nowhere, Wayne ran past me and 2 police officers! He caught the culprits at the Harris Teeter near our campus and turned them over to the police.

Wayne and I took several trips to out-of-town ballgames together and he always offered to drive. Along the way, he entertained us with his stories, and we recounted our various experiences together catching smokers, skippers, fighters, thieves, etc. But Wayne also talked about the many great students he taught...he genuinely loved his job.

It was an honor to know Wayne Schultz and to work with him. He will be missed and remembered by all who knew him. He was a true gentleman...may he rest in peace.

April 29, 2013

I worked with Wayne at South Mecklenburg for many years. He was a good teacher and a true friend.
Wayne successfully operated the school store for many years.
Wayne was VERY organized...he kept inventory of every pencil!
Before he retired, he trained me to run the store.I quit after a few months...lol...the job was way too much for me to handle!
At one time ,we both lived near Idlewild Farms. We would often share stories about the "changes" in the area.
I will miss seeing Wayne at K & W Cafeteria.
He always wore a smile !
Rest in Peace,
Tony Howard

I echo what Sarah Price and the other South Meck teachers have expressed....Wayne was a great guy with whom to work. We all made a great team and I often think about how Wayne and I stayed up until 3 am and 4am many mornings sitting in the halls at DECA state and national conferences making sure that students did not slip out of their rooms! He always had great stories to tell and there was not a whole lot that slipped by him! I know that Greg and his family were his pride and joy and he talked about them every chance he had. To borrow his phrase...I'm sure he is having a "fun-filled-thrilled-packed day" in heaven...Greg...May God hold you and your family close and bring you comfort and peace.

Dear Greg, Carmen, Brittany & Lauren,
Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time. Even though I have not had the opportunity to see him for a long time, I will always remember him as Uncle Cheesy. My two favorite memories are riding a bus all the way to Chicago to visit one Christmas many years ago and the other is when he showed us his new Cadillac. Our thoughts and prayers are with you as I recall one of his favorite sayings while I was growing up, "Holy Moly and sarsaparilla, Lay my head upon the pillow."

Mr. Schultz was my favorite teacher. His advertising class at South Meck in particular was fantastic, and helped ignite my interest in an industry that would later become my profession. He was a master storyteller and could captivate any group of high-schoolers with stories about mall security or busting high school smokers. But most of all he was a really great person and treated everyone fairly, with respect and was the consummate gentleman.

Wayne will always be missed for his wonderful smile & sunny personality. This was true while working with him at South Meck.(plus helping him catch smokers), seeing him at Sabre luncheons, or seeing him at K&W eating supper.

Cathie (Schultz) Madison

Growing up, we knew him as "Uncle Cheesy", the uncle who told stories, sang songs, rough-housed, and always made us laugh. He always told us, "I love my nieces to pieces!" And, he never missed an opportunity to show it. I have very fond memories that will stay with me always. My sincere condolences to famiy and friends. I hope you find solice in the fact that he was doing something he loved - simply riding his bike.

Wayne was such a kind and gentle soul. I was on the South Mecklenburg faculty for many years at the same time he was. He was a good friend to everyone, and always had a happy smile for staff and students. He had a talent for seeing the best side of every person and every situation, a much appreciated attribute that served the school well.

Deepest sympathies to the family and sincere condolences. Wayne was an extraordinarily good and kind man. He was a man of integrity, humor, and he was a committed educator in the global sense of that term. Lynda and I pray for God's comfort for the family at this loss. Eternal rest grant him, Lord; and may light perpetual shine upon him.

To Wayne's loved ones, I would like to say how very sorry I am for your loss. Wayne will certainly be missed by many. He was a reassuring presence in his neighborhood where he was always doing something to help his neighbors and just generally keeping an eye out on things as he frequently rode his bike around. He lived a few doors down from my mother and helped her out in small but meaningful ways. As a matter of fact, before my mother's husband passed away from cancer he asked Wayne to keep an eye out for her and he did not let him down. Many times he has helped by just simply putting her trash bin back in its place or helping out with yard work or just to simply be there to say a kind word to her. That meant a great deal to her! Me and my brother and sister were so appreciative of all he did and felt very blessed to know he was there if anyone needed him. The world has lost a kind soul and he has made a great impression upon me personally and I hope I can be as kind and helpful to others as he has always been. Peace be with you all.

Greg and family, I am so sorry to hear of Wayne's death. It comes as such a shock. Wayne and I taught together at South Meck for more than 21 years. He was my buddy. He was a wonderful teacher and all the kids loved him and his classes. We went on many DECA trips together but I think my favorite was California. We had a great time with the students that year.

We also worked together at Belk Eastland when he was a part-time security associate. We got into some real situations with shoplifters but Wayne always came out on the winning side. He was amazing in all his detective work. (Just ask the smokers he caught and would out run at South Meck)

We would see him occassionally at Sunrise Restaurant where they catered to his every menu desire. I remember just recently they didn't have vegetable soup on the menu and he was disappointed so they just whipped some up for him and he was a happy camper.

Wayne was a good soul and will be missed by all who knew him. But Greg, you and your children were his pride and joy. His face would light up everytime I asked about you and the kids and he always had pictures.

Comfort for you and yours during this time of great loss. You will be in our prayers.

April 27, 2013

Wayne will surely be missed by so many of his friends and neighbors. He was a very special person to me and I will always miss him.

My thoughts and Prayers go out to his family.
