Wilford Lloyd “Bill” Stone was born on January 11, 1922 in Des Moines, Iowa to Evan Herbert Stone and Luella (Moore) Stone. He passed away peacefully on June 22, 2014 in Coppell, Texas at the age of 92 years, 5 months and 11 days, with his family by his side.

Bill was one of seven children, having five brothers, Evan, Edward, Donald, Leland, Richard, and one sister, Margaret. His father Evan was 100% Swedish; his mother was 100% Irish – which made Bill a most interesting combination!

Bill attended Grinnell College and the University of Iowa before joining the Marine Corps in 1942. He served, with distinction, in World War II and the Korean War, obtaining the rank of Major by the time of his retirement in 1963. Upon his retirement from the Marine Corps, he sold insurance for a few years before settling into his second career in personnel services. He worked for and ultimately became owner of Lola Grant Personnel in Oklahoma City until retiring himself (and the company) in 1982. His “second retirement” was very brief, as he went to work for the State of Oklahoma Employment Commission within the year. He worked there until his “final retirement” in 1987.

Throughout Bill’s life, he was active in civic and charitable activities. Subsequent to his retirement, he volunteered at the Christmas Connection, the Oklahoma City Arts Festival, the Red Earth Festival, the Oklahoma State Capitol, and the Will Rogers World Airport, to name a few.

Of all of his activities, none was more important to him than his longstanding involvement with the Masons. His Masonic activities, awards, and honors are numerous. A representative, though not all-inclusive, listing would include the following: Bill was a perpetual member of three Oklahoma Lodges and served as Past Master of Oklahoma City Lodge #36. He served on several Grand Lodge Committees, was a past Chairman of the Home Board of Control, was a past presiding officer of the National Sojourners and Heroes and also served the York Rite, White Shrine and the Masonic Rosicrucians. He was active in membership, worked 4 degree teams and was a regular contributor to the Valley’s philanthropies and restoration fund. He held the Legion of Honor in the Order of DeMolay and took great pride in being a Grand Lodge Medal of Honor recipient.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents as well as of his six siblings. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 28 years, Mildred (Milly). He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Lloyd and Amanda Stone, his granddaughter, Harper Kathryn Stone, and his great nephew, Grayson Bain, all of whom live in Coppell, Texas.

Above everything else, Bill was a man of great integrity. He did more than his share; yet less than he wanted. He was a great role model, and a wonderful and dear father and friend. His soul has, at last, found its eternal home. He will be greatly missed.

Family and friends are encouraged to gather in honor of Bill at 10:00 am Saturday, June 28, 2014 at the Masonic Lodge #36, located at 2935 West Britton Road in Oklahoma City.
