Former Staten Islander Wilfredo Arocho Jr. 48,, of Lake Charles, La., a seaman and a loving family man, died Thursday in Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center, Lafayette, La., after suffering a stroke.

Born in Manhattan, he was brought to Concord in 1973 and graduated from Curtis High School. He moved to Port Richmond in the late 1980s and relocated to Lake Charles about 12 years ago.

He was an avid amateur boxer, and won three Golden Glove awards in his youth, his family recalled.

Mr. Arocho was also a member of the Stapleton Bombers softball team, and a co-founder of the OBOTS Motorcycle Club in Louisiana.

Along with riding motorcycles and boxing, he enjoyed playing handball in his spare time.

"He was always smiling and willing to help somebody. He will be sorely missed," said his sister, Wanda Arocho-Delgado.

While living on the Island, Mr. Arocho was a parishioner at Immaculate Conception R.C. Church, Stapleton.

In addition to his sister, surviving are his wife of five years, the former Alice Duplecion; his son, Christopher Joseph; his parents, Wilfredo Sr. and Ana Arocho; two brothers, Walter and Wilson; and two grandchildren.

Willie, you & Codie were 2 of the nicest people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. You were always so nice and funny, and you would help me with my wheelchair whenever I needed it. You are a kind and compassionate soul, and you will live on in our memories here in Louisiana. Rest peacefully Roach! <3
