WILLIAM CLOYD Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 12, 2017.

He died in his Iron Canyon Road home surrounded by family.
Santa Clarita City Councilman and fellow Sand Canyon resident Bob Kellar discussed Cloyd's impact on the community upon learning of his death.
"I have known Bill Cloyd for 30 years and I will tell you he was, as I think think of him, he was one of the monarchs of Santa Clarita," Kellar said. "He was best known for his architectural abilities, when he built a custom home, you always talked about how it was a Cloyd home. From an architecture basis, it was a very fine design. He built the Cadillac home, with all of the highest quality materials and amenities in a home. His reputation was impeccable in the community and I am so sorry for his passing."
Cloyd was an architect and custom-home builder who was born in Kentucky and moved to Southern California more than 70 years ago, family members said. Cloyd's Sand Canyon homes are typically marked by Tudor-esque exteriors, high ceilings, exposed wood beaming, textured plaster and beveled glass windows. The overall effect creates somewhat of a fairytale feel as guests grace the landing of his homes.
In addition to being a renowned home architect cited in numerous media outlets, including the L.A. Times, he once purchased a property from the Roman Catholic archdiocese in Santa Clarita, which was also part of the Gene Autry's Melody Ranch and Monogram Pictures.
He traveled all over the world on extreme hunts, and had a second home in Anchorage, Alaska.
He teamed with his son Bill Cloyd Jr. and daughter Rachel Jorgenson to form Cloyd Construction, which was responsible for The Preserve in Sand Canyon, among his many projects throughout Santa Clarita.
Cloyd Sr. was an avid outdoorsman and hunter throughout his life, and he went on hunting trips to Alaska, Arizona, Canada, Tajikistan and parts of Africa, to name a few of the many places. The environment was another cause he was passionate about, receiving recognition from organizations such as Boone and Crockett Club for his contributions, according to family members.
He was preceded in death by Jeanette Cloyd, his wife of 52 years.
He is survived by: his daughter, Rachel Jorgenson, (Kirk); his son, William Cloyd Jr., (Jasmine); his grandson, Travis Cloyd; his granddaughter, Carissa Zillner, (Devon); and his wife, Erica Betz Cloyd.

Funeral Services will be held at Eternal Valley Memorial Park and Mortuary on Wednesday, August 16th at 2:00 P.M. with a visitation prior from 1:00-1:30 P.M.

One day when I was around 11 or 12 Bill bought a dirt bike. Bill asked me if I wanted to go for a ride up to the local hills. Of course I wanted to go. We get up to the hills and Bill tells me to get off the bike that he wants to ride up this hill that looked huge to me. I got off the bike and he gets about 3/4 of the way up when he falls and comes sliding down the hill side. Bill cut his head open, blood was pouring from the top of his forehead and his t- shirt was soaked. He drove the dirt bike to Holy Cross hospital with me on the back of it to get stitches, next thing I know here comes Jeannette to pick us up. I don't think Bill ever grew up. It was great pleasure to know someone so full of life.

I have known Bill all my life. Bill was always playful and would come out to play whatever sport the kids on our block was playing. He was full of life and adventure and will be missed. Bill and Jeanette were a second set of parents to my brother and me. I remember how much he loved baseball. I would come over to the house and there was Bill in his office watching baseball while drawing plans for houses by hand. He was very talented. He was loved and will be missed.

The first time I met Bill, I was with Rachel at that time and we all went out to the Palms restaurant with the Levison family. After the very enjoyable meal, Bill got the check and, with a serious look on his face slid me the $850 bill. After picking myself off the floor, we all had a good laugh (thank God!).
That was back in 1986. Since then I have been fortunate to spend many a holiday, vacation, hunting and fishing trip and other family get togethers with Jeanette and Bill, my mother and father in law. How lucky I am to have spent this small amount of time with them compared to the awesome life they enjoyed.
Jeanette and Bill are now together again forever. God Bless them.

Those of us who got to know Mr. Cloyd were very lucky to have crossed paths with him. He was a wonderful man who loved to smile. We will remember him because he fought until the end; he was a true warrior who enjoyed going on adventures and loved his life. We will remember him for his optimism and positive energy which radiates through all of us. May our wonderful friend rest in paradise. I will always remember that smile and your bright light. I will forever miss you Mr. Cloyd. God has you in his keeping. I have you in my heart.
