William Patterson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 14, 2017.

Dr. William L. Patterson, age 66, received his angel wings while at home on May 13, 2017. His final days were spent peacefully with family and loved ones, enjoying all things in life that he so loved. Bill was born in Jacksonville, FL on February 16, 1951, and preceded in death by his parents, Dr. William M. Patterson, Jr. and Faye Beatty Patterson.

Bill leaves loving memories to be cherished by his daughter, Caroline (Jesse); his son, Mac; his sister, Cheryl Patterson Stedeford (Walter); nephew, Hays Patterson Carlyon (Kerri); and grand-niece, Avery, and grand-nephew, Jackson. Bill also leaves behind his special love, Janice Green, who took good care of him and helped him live his last days to their fullest. Bill graduated from The Bolles School in 1969 and from Wofford College in 1974. He went on to dental school at Emory University, graduated and returned to Jacksonville to practice dentistry alongside his father. Bill eventually took over the practice taking great pride in all that his father had built. He was loyal to the staff and clients and carried on with the outstanding service and traditions of the practice for over 45 years. He retired in 2015. A die-hard Gator fan who loved the outdoors, Bill had a very strong faith in God that carried him throughout his very full and memorable life. He blames CW and Grady (and many others) for all the good times, bad times, and other times that can't be mentioned here. He possessed an ideal balance of empathy, generosity, humor, and sweetness that simply radiated from him. Always the perfect southern gentleman with a witty commentary, he loved his children and family, his dogs (Katie, Belle, Boone and Ellie), hunting, history, traveling, classic rock, and his many, many friends.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 18, 10:00 a.m., at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 11801 San Jose Blvd., followed by a celebration of Bill's life.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for contributions to Bill's favorite charity, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital , 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. The family also asks that you spend time with your children, take a walk on the beach with your loved ones, make a toast to enduring friendships in this life and beyond, and work hard to Make America Great Again; it is what Bill would want.

To Caroline and Mac:

Your father was special to me for years. He and I first knew each other in MYF at Southside Methodist Church and he was so much fun! He attended Bolles and I was at duPont, but occasionally I was helping him with some English homework ~ that was a trip!

Years later he became my dentist and the dentist to my children and there has never been a better dentist ever. Even now that my children are grown with children of their own, they still say that no dentist will ever be better than Dr. Bill. He loved what he did and considered it an art and treated his patients as family.

He was an awesome friend and we shared a lot of laughter and tears and I treasured him and always will. It grieved me greatly to see him bear the pain and treatments these last years, but it always filled my heart to talk to him and hear his cheerful, optimistic attitude. His faith was strong and I know he is with his Lord.

God created one of a kind in Bill, not only as an incredible dentist of great compassion, but as a loving, devoted father and friend. You have so much to be thankful for and I wish you years of loving memories and the Lord's peace and love during this time.

Bill was an excellent dentist that took pride in his work and was always careful to make sure that you were as comfortable as possible. But much more than that he was a family friend. I enjoyed talking about the old days with him. Sending prayers to his family and friends.

I was so sad to hear of Dr. Bill's passing! My husband, the late Dr. Joel Baker, treasured Bill's friendship and loved remembering their fun hunting trips together. My sympathy to his family and also to his loyal staff.

Dr. Patterson was a kind and generous individual as well as being THE BEST Dentist. I actually looked forward to my visits to the office to be greeted with a smile and sometimes to visit with "Josie". What a wonderful man! He will be missed. Barbara Ivose (Friend and Patient)

It is with extreme sadness that I have learned of Dr. Patterson's passing. My husband and I were patients of his father's beginning in 1972 then continued with the young Dr. Patterson as our family grew to include two children. We all appreciated not only the excellent dental care provided but also the fine and genuinely caring person that Dr. Patterson was. I feel privileged to have known him. Sending thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.

Truly one-of-a-kind who will be missed by many. One of the last times I saw Dr. Patterson, he said he keeps this quote on his refrigerator: "Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away". No one lives this out more than he did. I know he has a whole group of angels welcoming him into heaven! May he rest in peace.

Dr. Patterson made this world a better place. All that were fortunate enough to have known him will greatly miss his kind and gentle ways. He made each of us feel very special. I actually looked forward to going to the dentist knowing I would get to visit with him. He never ceased to amaze me whether it was because he had brought the puppy to work that day or he had a life event he would share that made you laugh out loud!

I will always love and miss you Dr. Patterson!

May 17, 2017

While we lived in Jacksonville, Dr. Patterson was our dentist for many years. He was my "all time" favorite dentist. I recall one of his phrases that he would always say when he was doing his work in or around your mouth, that is, "let me know if this is troubling you." What a gracious and kind man he was. I know you will miss him as we too miss the memory of his kindness.

God's abundant blessings, peace & healing to each of you his family & close friends.

From our days together at Bolles and then on as freshmen roommates in college, Bill was always a lifelong close friend. He cared for his family, his friends and patients like no other. Bill was a great confidant and a trusted advisor on many subjects. I will miss him greatly. Willie, may you rest in peace and eternal happiness.

No one will ever take Dr. Patterson's place. He was gentle, kind, caring and always concerned about his patients. All of his staff was just as caring and kind. He was not only our family dentist, but also a good friend who always gave words of encouragement. Even when he was ill, he still took the time to put others "first". Bill is now one of God's angels and will look down on all of us with his "wonderful smile". Blessings to all his family.

Dr. Bill, you will always hold a special place in my heart. You were my dentist since 1986. You were a very caring person and dentist, always making sure you weren't causing any pain or discomfort for your patients. You always entered the examining room with a warm greeting and a hand shake, and usually didn't leave before sharing a funny story. You were much loved my friend. Rest In Peace!

Caroline and Mac my heart goes out to both of you. I may be grieving over the loss of someone with whom I've shared over 50 years of hunting, laughing, enjoying the sunsets at the end of the dock, crying /cheering in Section 1 of Florida Field, watching 9/11 unfold in the break room of his office, giving and seeking counsel about the opposite sex at our boys nights out and such a menagerie of what makes life worth living that I could fill volumes just denting the surface of what we shared. However, my loss pales in comparison to the fact you two have lost one of the most caring parents I've ever known.
I know right now your feeling of loss is great but take comfort in two things I know to be true (1)there are very few children who have experienced the depth of love and devotion that Willie had for each of you and (2)both of you brought him great joy and happiness becoming the adults you are today. Yes, he loved many things and many people but he cherished and idolized both of you and that will never change whether he is here or elsewhere. He made the world a better place for all of us whose paths he crossed. My heart is with you both.
Mahalo my friend Willie it was quite a ride!

In my Navy days I toured William Sr and Jr on a submarine I was stationed in Kings Bay. Dr Patterson always expressed appreciation for that for the over 20 years I was a patient of his. May he rest in peace. His smile and cheerful nature was his trademark.

Greatest Dentist ever! I first found Dr Patterson after neglecting my teeth for sometime due to a bad and painful experience. A friend of mine referred me to him and expressed how kind he was. Dr Patterson was amazing and was always mindful of how you were "holding up" thru every dental visit. His wonderful staff replicated his gentle spirit and kindness and I was always able to trust that no matter who he took on as an associate or an employee, that the culture would never change. I am so proud to have known such a compassionate and kind person and I am confident that he is resting peacefully and smiling large!

Words cannot describe how I feel right now. My heart hurts for everyone that knew him. If you knew him, you loved him. Dr Patterson not only taught me everything I know about dentistry but he also played a big part in the life lessons that came my way from age 21 until now. Working knee to knee with him everyday was such a valuable gift. I learned something new every single day. I'm sure I will continue to learn from him in the legacy he is leaving behind. I hope to always hear his good advice, his silly comments and remember his loving ways. He will forever be part of my life. I have no doubt he is in a better place- his faith is strong. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and also with his friends. If you knew Bill Patterson, you were truly his friend.

For over 25 years Dr. Patterson has put smiles on Walter, Kit, Sasha, Kayla and Dana, "I'm not hurting you am I?" The kindest, gentle man our family would call our Dentist. What a wonderful person to have in our world, we are blessed. He was more than our Dentist. He is our new Angel.

With quiet tears and hope for a cure, and the belief that surely someone so special as Dr. Bill Patterson is swinging in a hammock on an amazing beach in heaven. My mother worked for him and his father before him. He always made you feel so very important and safe. I never had a fear of dentists because of him. He was a gentle giant as described by many and he never left your side without leaving you with that sincere smile and the faithful message to "have a blessed day." Mahalo, Dr. Bill.

It's been a journey I will never regret. I started working with Bill in 1978 and am still working at the practice he dedicated his life to. He was so compassionate and truly loved helping people in the field of dentistry. All of his patients felt like they were family and knew that they could trust him fully. His courage and faith was so inspiring. He will be missed!
