William Terry Dickey, 61, President, Metropolitan Woodworks, Inc. died unexpectedly May 11, 2017.
Terry, a resident of Greensboro, NC, was born South Boston, Virginia. He graduated from Halifax County High School, serving as Vice President of his Senior Class. He received his B.S. in Industrial Forestry Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and University, and his MBA from the University of Iowa.
Terry started playing baseball at the age of 3, learning the fundamentals of the catcher position from his father. He was running down runners and backing up first base when he was very young. Terry was an All-Star player on the South Boston Dixie Youth Baseball League team. They won the Virginia state championship in 1968 and went on to play in the Little League World Series. In 1974 Terry won the batting crown of Halifax, and was catcher for the Halifax County High School Comets. As a family, baseball was a collaborative effort where the family would spend countless hours together practicing (shagging fly balls) watching and enjoying the sport. Terry continued his love of baseball playing for the Virginia Tech Hokies. He also enjoyed motorcycling, physical fitness, traveling (especially to Europe), and spending time with family and friends.
Terry was a dynamic executive in the furniture and cabinetry industry. His professional career began with LADD Corporation in 1978, from there he served in various roles with Singer Furniture Company; Vice President Manufacturing with Norcraft Companies, Inc.; President of Brammer Manufacturing Company; Executive Vice President and COO of Cardell Kitchen and Bath, El Campo Division; President and CEO of Marsh Furniture Company; and his current role as President and founder of Metropolitan Woodworks, Inc. Terry was highly respected in the industry and served multiple terms on the Kitchen Manufacturers Association (KCMA) Board and Specifications Committee.
Terry is survived by his loving wife Melinda Bell Dickey of Greensboro; his mother Lucille Dickey and brother Michael Dickey of South Boston, VA; nieces and nephew, Leslie Dickey Mason, Meghan Dickey Jahnke and Carson T. Bell. Terry is predeceased by his father William Douglas Dickey and his much loved paternal and maternal grandparents, especially Hattie Palmer.
Memorial services and celebration of Terry's life will be held at 12:00 noon, Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 2210 N. Elm Street, Greensboro, NC. The family will receive friends following the service in the Simmons Center with light refreshments.
In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to Terry's favorite charities, United Way or ASPCA, or to perform an act of kindness in his honor.

Terry was one of the most pleasant people I had ever had the good fortune of knowing. I worked with him on many projects during his tenure at Marsh Furniture. We had lunch frequently. I am at a loss for words. All I can say is that I cannot say enough good things about this fine man.

Terry was a true gentleman and I sincerely enjoyed my time spent with him. I met Terry when he moved to Greensboro to work at Marsh Furniture as I was selling wood products to Marsh. Terry was personable, approachable, and treated everyone with kindness. I continued to work with him through the years staying in touch even after he left Marsh. My sincere condolences to his family, and my desire that they know he left a mark in all of us who were lucky enough to meet him.

I worked for the courtyard, he came and stayed with us 4-5 days a week for work. It never felled he always had a smile on his face every morning. I never knew a guy who would be so happy at 530am. He never asked for much and would always lend an ear if something was wrong. He was by far my favorite regular guest. When I heard the news, I was in disbelief. I couldn't stop crying. He will be significantly missed.
