It's hard to accept Bill's gone. There's much to honor about his life. My memories of Bill go back to the 80's when a generation of us found ourselves in Wichita, trying to find out who we were and what our lives would be. In those mad, wild, joyful/painful years Bill was always at the center, connecting with, caring for, and influencing those around him. Bill was big-hearted and if you were his friend, you got a lot out of the bargain even if you didn't deserve it. I'll always be sad he left this life too soon. I'm grateful for his friendship and offer my deepest sympathies to Kathy and Bob.

I could probably go on and on about memories of Bill, but one thing I remember is that, many times, there would be a big puzzle going in the day room and the patients and staff would work on it. What we learned was that Bill when no one was around, would always take a piece of it. It didn't matter if he had a 3 day weekend coming up or not...he would carry it with him in his pocket and that was how he always ensured that HE would be the one to finish the puzzle! What a character. I've never known anyone else like him. The picture the family chose for the obituary is exactly how he looked when I met him and when I think of him, that is exactly what I see. I love you Bill.

Bill was one of the first people I met when I went to work at the State Hospital. We immediately hit it off. He was stuck working on the woman's unit because he couldn't repeatedly climb the stairs because of his knee. I think it was really because he had a built in excuse to never have to do shower duty! :) He became a good friend to both me and my husband. We shared many fun memories both at work and outside of work. I can't begin to say how sad I am that he is gone. He is truly a person that touched my life and brought many smiles and much laughter. I will never forget Bill.

Wow. This news comes as a complete shock. I am speechless. God must have needed an intellect in heaven as Bill was certainly one of the most intelligent men I have had ever met. He will be deeply missed.
My prayers and deepest sympathy go out to the family.

Bill was one of my closest friends during high school, especially our senior year. Unfortunately, we failed to keep in touch over the years. I have many fond memories of our times together. God Bless you, Bill. My condolences to your family.

I worked with Bill at the State Hospital in the 90s. He was a friend to everyone he worked with, patients and staff, always bringing humor to any situation. He genuinely liked people and it showed. I will remember him fondly in his special ratty sweater at ease wherever he was and watching Jeopardy answering every question.

There are no words to express my sadness. Bill was a selfless and special person. Larger than life with a smile to match. I met Bill 33 years ago. Not a week has gone by in the past few years that I had not spoken with him or looked forward to reading one of his letters. I love you and will miss you my friend. You are the keeper of my better angels. Our prayers and thought are with the Armstrong family.

Very Sad News. I met Bill in 1979 and enjoyed and respected his intellect, pursuit of knowledge and his charismatic pull of so many people. I saw him last a few years back during 4th of July and his uniqueness was as powerful as ever. My fondness of memory will be the marathon discussions of philosophy and life we enjoyed in those early years.

I spent many many hours of my life working side by side Bill at North Texas State Hospital and spent many hours laughing too. We had some pretty good adventures as well and I will never ever forget Bill trying to come up with names for my daughter while I was pregnant with her. Bill truly was one of a kind and will be missed by many.

I remember Bill's kind and accepting way. I remember him bringing me smiles while at Notre Dame...and then, connecting as friends again while working at the hospital...I am very glad that Bill was in my life during those times...My deepest sympathy to his family.

You were a dear friend that left me with many fond memories. We got into our share of trouble together, but you also had a way of keeping me on track. Thanks for always believing in me, for pushing me to always be better, and always cheering me on. You will be in my heart forever.
