TOLLESBORO | William R. "Billy" Barbour left this earth behind July 11, 2012. What a tremendous fighter he was. After years of suffering from heart disease and more recently, lymphoma, Billy surrendered early Wednesday morning in the arms of his loving wife. Billy will always be remembered as a selfless man who gave so much to so many. In his 37 years of service at Barbour and Son Funeral Home, Billy comforted many families who were in their darkest days of life. He always knew the exact words to say in such time of desperation. The Tollesboro community will forever be indebted to such a compassionate, generous man. Billy was a man of many hobbies. In the early years of his life, he excelled on the basketball court. After he married, he wasted no time in acquiring a new hobby, softball. Some of his fondest memories were spent as a member of the Quick's Run softball team. It wasn't long after his softball years, that Billy hit the links. He golfed feverishly until he suffered his first massive heart attack at the tender age of 34. As his heart began failing him, he took up boating and fishing. Eighteen long years of unending heart issues ensued before Billy received a new heart. His new heart gave him a new lease on life. He shared his testimony, appreciation, and experience as an organ recipient with the congregations of 22 local churches. Within weeks, his new heart enabled him to head back to the golf course. In the last days of his life, there was nothing he loved more than the precious afternoons he spent at Tee City Golf Course with his buddies. Never, ever did he let his diseased body keep him from doing what he loved most. Billy was also an avid University of Kentucky basketball fan. Very rarely did he miss watching his beloved Cats. In fact, Billy and his buddy, Jeff Harrison, were in attendance at the infamous 1992 Elite Eight UK/Duke game. Billy leaves behind a very loving family. He was born to Janis and Tommy Barbour on March 6, 1954. In January of 1978, Billy married his soulmate, Elica. After 33 years of marriage, they had to say their earthly goodbyes. Billy also leaves behind three beautiful daughters, Haley Barbour Messer, Jana (Adam) Henson and Molly (Nick) Hines. Rounding out the immediate family is Billy's only son, Tommy (Amber) Barbour; and he also leaves behind his dear sister, Mary Beth (Tom) Russell; and his three precious grandchildren, Westin, Cole and Ryan. Visitation for Billy will be Friday, July 13, 2012, at the Tollesboro Christian Church from 5-8 p.m. Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Tollesboro Christian Church. Burial will follow in the Hillcrest Garden of Memories. Pallbearers will be Charles "Purdy" Dearing, Anthony Hamilton, Al Bane, Casey Hord, Rusty Hord, and Perry Hord. Honorary Pallbearers will be Westin Messer, Cole Messer and Ryan Hines.
