STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- William J. Barton, 93, of Dongan Hills, a retired postal worker remembered as a loving family man, died Friday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. Mr. Barton was born in Manhattan and served overseas in the U.S. Army during World War II. He lived in New Jersey before settling in Dongan Hills around 1951. For 32 years, Mr. Barton was a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier in Manhattan, and he also worked as a loyal and dedicated employee at the Virginia Funeral Chapel in Dongan Hills for more than 20 years. STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- William J. Barton, 93, of Dongan Hills, a retired postal worker remembered as a loving family man, died Friday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze.

Mr. Barton was born in Manhattan and served overseas in the U.S. Army during World War II. He lived in New Jersey before settling in Dongan Hills around 1951.
For 32 years, Mr. Barton was a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier in Manhattan, and he also worked as a loyal and dedicated employee at the Virginia Funeral Chapel in Dongan Hills for more than 20 years. "Bill was family to us at Virginia Funeral Chapel and he really loved being around people, we will miss him dearly", said the patriarch Funeral Director of Virginia Funeral Chapel, Mr. Roeser.

Mr. Barton retired from his postal route in the late 1980s and from the funeral chapel in the late '90s.

An avid reader, Mr. Barton was remembered most for being a loving family man.

"He was an angel, he really was," said his son, Richard H. Barton. "He loved people unconditionally."

Mr. Barton was a parishioner of St. Ann's R.C. Church, Dongan Hills.

In addition to his son, surviving is his wife of more than 60 years, the former Jean D. Carollo.

The funeral will be Wednesday from the Virginia Funeral Chapel, Dongan Hills, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Ann's Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Grasmere.
