Columbus, Georgia- SGM (Ret) William "Bill" C. Beers, age 80, resident of Columbus, died on Sunday, March 24, 2013 at Medical Center Barbour, Eufaula, Alabama. Funeral services are scheduled at the Chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus on Friday, March 29, 2013, 12 noon, with Reverend David Howle officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery, Fort Mitchell, Alabama. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, March 28, 2013 from 6-8 p.m.

SGM Beers, son of the late William Hastings Beers and Mabel Catherine Solt Beers, was born January 4, 1933 in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He was an active member of Edgewood Baptist Church, active in the senior choir, Joyful Heirs, and also served as Food Service Coordinator for both Edgewood Baptist Church and St. Paul UMC for many years. SGM Beers was retired from the U.S. Army where he served honorably for over 29 years. During his military tenure, he served in both the Korea Era Conflict and Vietnam Era Conflict, and received the Bronze Star for his exemplary service.

SGM Beers was preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret Ferber, Mildred Hertzog, and Kathleen Adams; one brother, SFC Jack B. Beers; and a grandson, Brian McCameron. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Aleatha "Lee" Beers of Columbus; two daughters, Leona Detwiler and her husband Michael of Phenix City, Alabama and Lynne Murillo and her husband Andres of Columbus; one son, William "Bill" C. Beers, Jr and his wife Barbara of White Hall, Arkansas; four grandchildren, Daniel McCameron of Austin, Texas, Dorothy Beers of White Hall, Arkansas, Lindsay Murillo of Columbus, and Kaitlyn Beers of White Hall, Arkansas; six great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
