William Charles Cable, age 79, passed away on August 6, 2014 in Raleigh, NC at Elmcroft of Northridge Assisted Living Community after a long struggle with Parkinson's Disease. A memorial service will be held at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home's Chapel, 300 Saint Mary's St., Raleigh on Sunday, August 10, at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends there after the service. William Charles Cable, age 79, passed away on August 6, 2014 in Raleigh, NC at Elmcroft of Northridge Assisted Living Community after a long struggle with Parkinson's Disease.

Bill was born in Durham, NC on August 26, 1935, the son of Rupert Winfred Cable and Mary Porter Cable and grew up on a tobacco farm near Greensboro.

Bill graduated from high school in 1953 and then attended UNC-Chapel Hill where he participated in the Reserve Officers Training Corps. He received a degree in Business Administration and on the day he graduated was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Marine Corps and headed off to Quantico, VA for training.

During his two years of active duty, Bill spent six months aboard ship in the Mediterranean and two months on the ground in Lebanon during the 1958 Lebanon crisis. Serving as a 1st Lieutenant and Artillery Forward Observer, Bill received a certificate of achievement for service above and beyond the call of duty. Bill joined the reserves after active duty and finished his service as a Captain.

Bill married Jan in 1957 and they had a daughter Susan and two sons, Steve and Scott.

Bill worked in the insurance industry upon returning to civilian life. From 1970 to 1981, Bill worked for Hutchinson and Associates and was President of the firm of his last eight years there. In 1981, Bill founded Cable's Frame House in Raleigh, and worked there until he retired. His son Scott now owns and runs the business at 806 St. Mary's St., one of Raleigh's oldest frame shops and art galleries.

He was predeceased by his wife, Janette Wall Cable, after 52 years of marriage and by a son, Stephen Charles Cable.

He is survived by a daughter, Susan Cable Ross, and husband, Willard Ross, Raleigh, NC, a son, William Scott Cable, and wife, Annette Cable, Clayton, NC, and three grandchildren, Hannah Ross, Raleigh, NC, Lucas Cable, Clayton, NC and Jake Cable, Clayton, NC. He is also survived by a brother, Robert L. Cable, Greensboro, NC and a brother, Lawrence E. Cable, Huntsville, Alabama.

The family thanks the wonderful staff at Elmcroft of Northridge for the loving care they gave Bill during his eight years there and to the caregivers from Transitions LifeCare who made his last year so much more comfortable.
