Obituary

William James "Bill" Johnson, 90, died July 9 at his home. He was born on February 3, 1923 in Los Angeles, California to the late Marcella Schweitzer Johnson and the late James Joseph Johnson. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps, WWII veteran who flew 46 combat missions as a bombardier. While serving, he was shot down over Yugoslavia and earned an Air Medal with eight Oak Leaf clusters, four battle stars, a presidential unit citation and a purple heart. William James "Bill" Johnson, 90, died July 9 at his home. He was born on February 3, 1923 in Los Angeles, California to the late Marcella Schweitzer Johnson and the late James Joseph Johnson. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps, WWII veteran who flew 46 combat missions as a bombardier. While serving, he was shot down over Yugoslavia and earned an Air Medal with eight Oak Leaf clusters, four battle stars, a presidential unit citation and a purple heart. He retired from Buckeye Cotton Oil Company and Buckeye Cellulose Corp. He was a member of the American Oil Chemist Society, Meals on Wheels and MIFA volunteer, and a Boy Scout leader. His hobbies included building doll houses and clocks. He was one of the first round dance instructors in Memphis and was the founder of the Rebel Roundabouts Round Dance Club. He and his wife, Elsye, also danced with the Oak Park Promenaders and the Dixie Dudes and Dolls square dance clubs. He was active at St. Paul United Methodist Church, and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsye Johnson, and is survived by 2 sisters, Lorraine Knabb and Pat Schweikert, and his children, Laura Vadney of Memphis and Teresa Johnson of Brooklyn, N.Y., as well as his grandsons, Tim Vadney of Los Angeles and Joshua Vadney of Erie, Pennsylvania, and four great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends with refreshments provided at Family Funeral Care located on Summer Avenue, Friday July 12 from 5-7 PM. Services will be 10 AM Saturday, July 13 at Family Funeral Care. Burial will follow at Memphis Memory Gardens.
