Dr. William Lowndes "Bill" McDougall, Jr., passed away peacefully in his sleep at his residence on St. Simons Island Sunday. He is survived by a daughter, Sheldon McDougall, also of St. Simons; a grandson, Chris Jagger of Atlanta; a sister-in-law, Ann Bracey of Duluth; nephew, Dr. Grattan C. Woodson of Atlanta; two nieces, Elizabeth Bracey of Duluth and Mary Clare Woodson of Mill Valley, CA and two little cousins, Hayden and Carson Lyrberg. Dr. McDougall's beloved wife of 62 years, Dorothy A. "Dotty" McDougall passed away less than a year ago. He was also predeceased by his son, William L. "Billy" McDougall III.
Bill McDougall attended N. Fulton High School, and graduated from Baylor. He went on to graduate from Emory University, having pledged Chi Phi fraternity. William McDougall next received his M.D. from Emory University School of Medicine. After completing his internship and residency at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, Dr. McDougall taught on the faculty of the Emory Medical School while he practiced medicine at the Emory Clinic.
Later, having established a private practice, Dr. McDougall attained the title of Fellow of The American College of Surgeons in Urology. He was the Editor of the Fulton County Medical Society Bulletin for three years. He served as President of Emory Medical Alumni Association in 1969, and the Atlanta Clinical Society in the same year.
Bill McDougall was a founder of West Paces Ferry Hospital in Atlanta, and was the first Chairman of the Board of the West Paces Medical Center. He was President of the Hospital Corporation of America. He was Chief of Staff of the West Paces Ferry Medical Center in 1973, and Chief of Surgery there in 1974. In 1973, Bill became a member of the Board of Governors of the Hospital Corporation of America in Nashville, Tennessee.
In 1982, Dr. McDougall was presented with the Distinguished Leadership Award by the West Paces Medical Center. He became a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International in 1996.
After Dr. and Mrs. McDougall retired to Sea Island, they began to pursue their dream of world travel, and shared many joyous times together. Bill loved fishing, and anything done outdoors, including gardening. He was passionate about education, and never lost his thirst for learning.
William McDougall never met a stranger. He was a friend to all, and a smiling compassionate person with a twinkle in his eye. His deep faith sustained him, and he departed this world at peace. He will be missed.
