William Prillaman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 20, 2013.

William Norman Prillaman, 69, of Forest, passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Swanna Kaye Catron Prillaman.

Born in Pulaski, Virginia on September 15, 1943, he was a son of the late Cecil Roy Prillaman, Sr. and Nellie Aust Prillaman. He graduated from Pulaski High School and earned a B.S. in Engineering from Virginia Tech. Norman worked as a nuclear engineer at Areva in Lynchburg and retired in 2009 after over 36 years of service.

Norman enjoyed spending time with his family and especially enjoyed hunting for sharks' teeth when the whole Prillaman clan vacationed at Myrtle Beach, a tradition for the past 30 years. He was a wise mentor to his family, able to think through issues and help reach solutions. He was always ready to help if he could. In his retirement, he enjoyed researching family genealogy and got a good laugh when he traced one of the family lines to Lady Godiva.

Norman is survived by his son, Dr. William Norman "Norm" Prillaman, II and his wife Sonya of Forest; his daughter, Amy Susan Cardwell and her husband Bobby of Altavista. He was grandfather or "Pops" to Emma and Phoebe Prillaman; Justin and Chelsea Cardwell and to great-grandson, Kaygan. He is also survived by one brother, Cecil R. Prillaman, Jr. and his wife Mercedes P. Prillaman; one sister, Lucy P. Howlett; sister-in-law, Jewell Stuart and her husband Gene; five nieces and one nephew.

Norman had very special neighbors, Herb and Linda Vreeland, who gave lovingly of their time, food, and company.

A funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, June 23, 2013 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Fort Hill Memorial Park with Pastor Jon Dupin officiating.

The family would like to thank all of the doctors and nurses who contributed to his care, especially Dr. Jeremy Hardison. Also, thank you to the staff of various Centra Health organizations who cared for Norman.

Although I only worked with Norm on a few projects at B&W/AREVA, he was always easy to work with, knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. He will surely be missed by all those he touched in this world. Please accept my condolences.

I have never met a kinder gentle couple than Norm and Kay, They both will ever be remembered for this by anyone they met. My husband and I were the lucky ones chosen by them to build their beautiful home and we were always treated with respect. You ,children and grandchildren were surely blessed

Norman was a man of wisdom and strength and character. I learned more from him than I did from any other man besides my own father.

He was a wonderful father, and a dear friend. Moreover , he was a very decent and kind human being.

I am glad that he - and his wife of over 40 years- now smile at us in the presence of God Almighty.

Well done, thy good and faithful servant.
