Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 24, 2014.

William H. Scheuerman
1936-2014

TOWNSHEND – William ("Bill") Scheuerman, Jr., 78, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, June 21, 2014, at his home, following a lengthy battle with lung cancer.

Bill was born on April 13, 1936, in Morristown, New Jersey. He grew up in New Jersey, and enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of 17. He received basic training and advanced infantry training at Fort Dix, New Jersey. From 1955 to 1958, he was stationed in Asmara, Eritrea, in Africa, where he served as a M.P. Following Africa, he served as Company Armorer at Camp Wolters near Fort Worth, Texas, from 1958-1959. From 1959 to 1961, he was stationed at Camp Drake, outside of Tokyo, Japan, where he worked as the Unit Armorer. In 1961, he returned stateside to Fort Belvoir, Virginia. From 1962 to 1964, he was stationed at Gelnhausen, Germany, with the 2nd Battalion, 48th Infantry, 3d Armored Division. He was honorably discharged in 1964 from the U.S. Army, but joined the New Jersey National Guard in 1980. He was honorably retired at the rank of Sergeant with full military benefits in 1991. In civilian life, Bill worked as a carpenter and maintenance supervisor in Warren County, New Jersey, until his retirement in 1993. In his retirement, Bill was an avid reader, hiked every day, and tended his vegetable garden with great success. He was an excellent baker, making homemade bread and pies every week.

In 1969, he married Joyce (Miller) Scheuerman (whom he referred to as "the best woman in the world"). He is survived by his devoted daughter, Sheila and son-in-law, Jeff Karlin. Besides his wife Joyce, Bill was predeceased by his beloved dog, Molly.

Bill's family wishes to thank Dr. Moss Linder for his extraordinary care, Crystal Mansfield for being Bill's guardian angel and friend, and the nurses and staff at Grace Cottage Hospital for the exceptional attention that Bill received during his recent hospital stays.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2014, at 2 p.m. at the Townshend Public Library. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Bill's name may be made to the Townshend Public Library, P.O. Box 252, Townshend, VT 05353.
