William "Bill" James Shackelton, 73, of Otego passed away on Sunday, May 22, 2011. Born October 21, 1937 in Masonville, he was the son of the late John P. and Elizabeth (Cummings) Shackelton. Bill graduated from A.L. Kellogg Central School in 1956 and entered the US Air Force in September of 1956. He was trained in jet mechanics and stationed in Las Vegas and later in Korea. Upon discharge in March of 1960, Bill worked for various companies around Delaware County as a diesel mechanic, most recently for Delaware County Highway Department. William "Bill" James Shackelton, 73, of Otego passed away on Sunday, May 22, 2011. Born October 21, 1937 in Masonville, he was the son of the late John P. and Elizabeth (Cummings) Shackelton. Bill graduated from A.L. Kellogg Central School in 1956 and entered the US Air Force in September of 1956. He was trained in jet mechanics and stationed in Las Vegas and later in Korea. Upon discharge in March of 1960, Bill worked for various companies around Delaware County as a diesel mechanic, most recently for Delaware County Highway Department. Forced to retire in 1994 due to ill health, Bill kept busy until the day he died.

On October 13, 1962, he married Jetta (Graves) Shackelton. Together they raised four children in Treadwell. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Jetta; his children, Elizabeth Hasbrouck of Sidney and her children, Lauren Marszal, and Nicholas and Morgan Carpenter; Sean (Donna) Shackelton of Purling and their children, Craig, Kayla and Elizabeth Shackelton, Adam, Alex and Ashley Jarvis, Christopher Johnson and David Bedell; Michael (Shelly) Shackelton of Bainbridge and their children, Cody, Collin and Hannah Shackelton; and Amy Shackelton of Otego and her daughter Jetta Shackelton; his sisters, Bette (Don) Hall of Oneonta and Bonnie (Dick) Keech of Watertown; his sisters in law, Joan Shackelton of Oneonta, Candace Graves of Altamont and Lynn Schaeffer of North Carolina; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother, Raymond and his nephew, Gary Hall.

Family will receive friends on Wednesday, 2:00 – 5:00 PM at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 34 River St., Otego. A memorial service will be held immediately following at 5:00 PM with military honors. A reception will follow at the Otego American Legion. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
