WILLIAM MORTON SLATER, of Memphis, TN, died on Veteran's Day, November 11, 2011. "Bill" Slater was born on February 15, 1925 in Laurel, Maryland. Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Juanita Slater, granddaughter, Krista Patterson and her husband David Patterson of Memphis; grandson. Josh Miller of Olive Branch; sister, Velma Williamson and her husband Jimmy Williamson of Laurel, MD; son-in-law Gary Miller of Whitefish, MT. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Megan Patterson (19) and Christian Patterson (10) and two nephews, Howard and Alan Grimes. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Megan Patterson (19) and Christian Patterson (10) and two nephews, Howard and Alan Grimes. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Russell Slater and Josephine Elizabeth Brown, and his daughter, Cheryl Yvonne Miller. Slater was a wonderful and loving man, father, husband, grandfather, and friend to all. Bill retired from the Washington Post and Star in 1984. He served as a B-24 tall gunner in the Air Force during WWII and was a German POW for six months. Bill restored over 30 airplanes and 3 antique autos as hobbies. He held single/multi-engine and instrument flight certificates and was a licensed A&P mechanic. His fondest memories were trips in his airplanes that he shared with his wife and family. He will surely be missed! The visitation will be held on November 18 at 10 a.m. followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at Collierville Funeral Home. A reception for the family will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude in memory of Cheryl Yvonne Miller. Online condolences may be made at www.ColliervilleFuneral.com
