Lt.Col Wertz (Ret)
After working under your command at Anchorage Fire & EMS for many years I found you to always be caring, compassionate, and professional about your job. You spoke highly of your friends and family and of their achievements. As a leader you assisted all of us through thick and thin and managed to remain positive. The good lord has found another great man to carry on his deeds. Rest in peace my old friend. God Speed.

Rest in Peace Lt. Colonel Dick Wertz. Your attention to detail and dedication to the cause was always inspiring. You were a key player in the advancements in operations, services and the direction that are now seen in the excellence that the Anchorage Fire and EMS system provides. You touched more individuals that can be counted but none more than me. You were a great leader and a great friend, and thank you for being my Assistant Chief for all those years.

My father was on the Anchorage VFD under Dick's leadership and I remember fondly spending days up at the station with the guys during the Crusade for Children. He was a calm, authoritative man who was tasked with the unfortunate job of letting my family know when I had been in a grave accident about 20 years ago. His actions and words kept things calm in what could have been a very chaotic moment in a family's history. I am eternally grateful for Dick Wertz. I extend my heartfelt thanks to his family for sharing him with us in Anchorage, and my deepest condolences to all.

Rarely in life are you given the chance to come across a fine man like Dick Wertz. I had the distinct pleasure of being a friend of Dick while serving together in the fire service. He was caring, compassionate, funny, considerate and a true gentleman. Heaven has gotten a fine soul. Daryl & Mike you have my deepest condolences and you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
