Wilma Barrett,86, of Spring, Texas passed away Tuesday, January 19, 2010. She was born Wilma Keels in Groveton, Texas on September 24, 1923 and became the oldest of a farmer's family of eight children. After graduating from Pennington High School she was invited by her aunt and uncle to visit New York where she decided to live and work. She met her future husband at a YWCA dance. They were married in The Little Church Around the Corner on January 14, 1950. It was near where she worked as a bookkeeper in a large bank. After moving to New Brunswick, N.J. they had one child a daughter named Karen. The child's severe asthma made it necessary for them to move back to Houston, Texas. Here she retired from business and devoted herself to her family. During this time she made quilts that were masterpieces and crocheted afghans. She was an excellent cook and nourished our family with healthy dinners. She became one of those quiet undecorated heroines of our family, and we will miss her. Her mother once told her that the quality of a marriage could be seen in the wife's face and after sixty years of marriage, she was beautiful. She is preceded in death by her father, Clarence Keels, and mother, Lula Mabry Keels and by four brothers, Clarence, Lloyd, Floyd, and Henry Keels and one sister, Mildred Blair. She is survived by her husband, John Barrett and her daughter Karen Barrett and one brother, Edward Keels and one sister, Gladys Graham. Visitation will be on Friday, January 22nd from 7-9 PM at the funeral home. Services will be held on Saturday, January 23rd at 11:00 AM at Brookside Funeral Home Champions. Entombment will follow at Earthman Resthaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to M.D. Anderson or the American Cancer Society.
