ALEXANDER, Wilmarth Everett, fondly known as Alex, age 100, of Richmond, passed away July 18, 2014. He was born November 6, 1913 in Pawtucket, R.I. and moved to Sandston as a young child. He and his family were some of the first settlers in Sandston with a population of 400 people. There were only three stores. Fish, fruit and country produce were sold from wagons; there were morning and evening houses to house milk delivery, daily ice delivery and morning and evening Richmond newspaper delivery; and as a young boy, Mr. Alexander delivered the Richmond newspaper. ALEXANDER, Wilmarth Everett, fondly known as Alex, age 100, of Richmond, passed away July 18, 2014. He was born November 6, 1913 in Pawtucket, R.I. and moved to Sandston as a young child. He and his family were some of the first settlers in Sandston with a population of 400 people. There were only three stores. Fish, fruit and country produce were sold from wagons; there were morning and evening houses to house milk delivery, daily ice delivery and morning and evening Richmond newspaper delivery; and as a young boy, Mr. Alexander delivered the Richmond newspaper. He graduated from Highland Springs High School and in December of 1941, married the love of his life. War was declared and he had to leave his new wife and home. He served in the United States Army during WWII and spent time in the South Pacific. He was the son of the late William Everett Alexander and Ida Chamberlain. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Elsie Parker Alexander of 64 years; and his sister, Lois Alexander Aigner. He leaves to cherish his memory one daughter, Martha Alexander Gillis; and one son, Wilmarth Everett Alexander Jr. and his wife, Cathy Archer Alexander; five grandchildren, Courtney Elizabeth Gillis, Wilmarth Everett Alexander III (Rett) and his wife, Tiffany Newton Alexander, William Justin Gillis and his wife, Charlotte Corvin Gillis, Robert Vaughan Alexander and his wife, Doan Huynh Alexander, Ryan Archer Alexander and his wife, Stephanie Cannon Alexander, all of Henrico and Hanover; and seven great grandchildren, Tyler Alexander, Madison Alexander, Sidney Alexander, Slade Alexander, Reese Alexander, Peyton Alexander and Dax Alexander. He is also survived by one sister, Doris Alexander Starr of Sandston; and one brother, Robert Chamberlain Alexander of Goochland; and numerous nieces and nephews. He founded and operated Alexander Insurance Agency in Sandston for most of his adult life. He had a great sense of humor and outlook on life, loved to play golf, woodworking, and work his annual vegetable garden. He was a devoted husband and a dear father, grandfather "Dadoo" and great-grandfather. He was a charter member of the Sandston Baptist Church, but after he married, he joined the Sandston Presbyterian Church and served as an Elder. He was also a charter member of the Sandston Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. The Family is very grateful for the loving care he received from the staff at The Lynmoore, Medi Home Health and Hospice, Dr. David Pong and Kristy Johnson. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, Va. 23231. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, July 24, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Sandston Presbyterian Church, 13 N. Confederate Ave., Sandston, Va. 23150. Interment is private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Rotary Foundation, or the church, or the charity of your choice. Online condolences may be made at www.nelsenrichmond.com.
