Winnifred Adams Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 20, 2012.

Winnifred May Adams passed from this life on Friday, November 16, 2012 at the age of 93. Her cheerful spirit will be sorely missed by many family, friends and colleagues.

Winnie was born in 1919, the second child and first daughter of Harry Bertram Preston and Mable Leach Preston, in Bethany, Ontario, Canada. The Preston family grew to have 12 children and Winnie, the oldest daughter, worked hard through her youth, helping her parents raise the many young Prestons and working the beautiful farm that supported them.

She was an adventurous, intellectually curious and lively woman. She had a varied and interesting career as a registered nurse for 60 years. She served as lieutenant in the Canadian army in London during World War II; worked at the emergency unit of Parkland Hospital in Dallas; in several nursing homes, rehab hospitals and psychiatric hospitals in Anchorage, Alaska; Shreveport, Louisiana; Georgetown, Texas; Denver and Dallas.

She met her husband, Charles (Chuck) Adams, another adventurous and lively soul, in Anchorage; they were married in 1947. Her only child, Sharon Sue, was born in Anchorage. The family had great times together, traveled extensively and lived in many interesting places.

She was a lovely person-very polite, caring and kind, but also smart and opinionated. She loved gardening, dancing, handwork and good conversation.

Winnie was extraordinarily strong and healthy until recently. She loved to work out and swim at the Body Business health club. She walked extensively and mowed her lawn on the hottest days. We want to thank the staff of Arden Courts, the wonderful support team from Hospice Austin, our friend and helper Kathy Smith, the kind staff at the HEB pharmacy on Burnet, Dr. William Howland of the Austin Asthma Clinic, and all the many others who have sympathetically supported her, particularly during her last year.

She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Adams Flournoy and grandson, William Lyman Grant both of Austin, Texas; her sister, Marion Maddock of Grand Junction, Colorado; her brothers, Glen Preston, Meredith Preston, and Barry Preston all of Bethany, Ontario; and many in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends in many places.

She will be buried with a graveside ceremony at I.O.O.F. Cemetery (East 7th Street in Georgetown) at noon on Thursday, November 29th. A viewing and visitation is scheduled for 9:30 am until 11:30 am on that day at the Cook-Walden-Davis Funeral Home in Georgetown, Texas.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Winnie's honor to: VFW Post # 8587, 1000 North College Street, Georgetown, Texas 78626 or The Salvation Army ATT: Tony Ware, P.O. Box 1000, Austin, Texas 78767.

Arrangements by Cook-Walden Davis Funeral Home, 2900 Williams Drive, Georgetown, Texas 78628 (512)863-2564.
