Zak was born in Fayetteville, NC on 31 July 1976 and died of natural causes at his home in Arlington, VA on 23 Aug 2014. He was raised in Philadelphia, PA, attended Christ the King Elementary School and graduated from Archbishop Ryan High School and LaSalle University.
Before joining the Army in 2001, Zak managed an Abercrombie and Fitch clothing store in Christiana, DE. His style in civilian attire is clearly reflective of his time at Abercrombie.

Ice hockey was a passion. Zak began playing at an early age and continued through high school, college, to a team at Ft. Benning, GA. As Abercrombie influenced his clothing choices the "rough and tumble" hits of ice hockey led him to embrace the rigors of the infantry soldiers. And, he chose the exceptionally rigorous. He successfully completed Airborne School, Ranger School and Pathfinder School. In addition to graduating from these physically and psychologically challenging courses, Zak graduated from Armor Officers' Career Course, Ft. Knox, KY and in June of this year the Command and Staff College, Ft. Leavenworth, KS. His military awards and decorations include Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Ranger Qualification Tab, Parachutist Badge and Pathfinder Badge.

Zak was dedicated to his soldiers. He was especially proud to have led his Stryker Soldiers in combat in Iraq. He completed two combat tours there: one as a platoon leader, the other as a company commander. This dedication and commitment extended to his brother officers from whom he received and to whom he gave knowledge and inspiration.

From school to duty stations and most recently to the National Guard Bureau, Zak's friends speak to his legacy. Those who knew him as a warrior, father, son, brother and friend will never forget him!

Zak is survived by his daughter Ava and her mother, Rosemary "Cassie" Calvin, Waycross, GA, his mother Kathleen Waity, Philadelphia, PA, his father Colonel Raymond T Waity (US Army retired) and stepmother JoAnn FerraraWaity, Mechanicsburg, PA, his sisters Jessica Waity (Kenneth Welch), Philadelphia, PA and Jill Waity Dufour (Robert Dufour), Wilmington, NC, nephew Kenneth Jayden Welch, aunts, uncles and cousins and his faithful dog, Finnegan.

A viewing will be held at Murphy Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, VA on September 9th from 1:00 to 2:00 pm followed by a funeral service beginning at 2:00 pm. Interment with full military honors will take place at Arlington National Cemetery on October 2nd.
A fund has been set up for Ava Waity through Alliant Credit Union in care of Raymond T. Waity.
