Zakiya Talibah EL Bey, 75, of Morganton, North Carolina, formerly of New York, died Thursday evening, August 7, 2014 in Morganton. Mrs. Bey was born in New York, New York on August 7, 1939 to the late Robert Maillard and Olga Lewis. Mrs. Bey was married to Ogbonna Bey, who preceded her in death on February 23, 2011. She was a dietician with the Western Carolina Center, where she retired after many years of service. Mrs. Bey was a member of Clock of Destiny and Moorish Science Temple of America. She was an avid martial arts enthusiast and maintained her achievements as a third degree black belt. Mrs. Bey was a talented musician....
Zakiya Talibah EL Bey, 75, of Morganton, North Carolina, formerly of New York, died Thursday evening, August 7, 2014 in Morganton.
Mrs. Bey was born in New York, New York on August 7, 1939 to the late Robert Maillard and Olga Lewis. Mrs. Bey was married to Ogbonna Bey, who preceded her in death on February 23, 2011. She was a dietician with the Western Carolina Center, where she retired after many years of service. Mrs. Bey was a member of Clock of Destiny and Moorish Science Temple of America. She was an avid martial arts enthusiast and maintained her achievements as a third degree black belt. Mrs. Bey was a talented musician. Every Saturday, she enjoyed playing the conga drums with her band. She loved dancing and was very family oriented. Mrs. Bey was a true optimist who was deeply admired by all who knew her. Her sense of love enabled her to find good in everyone. She will be greatly missed.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Bey was preceded in death by two brothers, Russell Woodard and Freddie Woodard.
Survivors include three sons, Mwamba Sentwali EL Bey of Bronx, NY, Rajiid EL Bey of Bronx, and Travis Wayne Logan of Morganton; a daughter, Yamminah EL Bey of Bronx; a brother, Ronald Lewis of Bronx; a sister, Yvonne Marine of Bronx; eleven grandchildren, Akilah EL Bey of Bronx, Kwame T. Lewis-Bey of New Jersey, Keyera Jamia Logan of Morganton, Akil Jabari Logan of Morganton, Akeem Mustafa EL Bey of Bronx, Omari Jahi Logan of Morganton, Zaid Ahmad Bey of Bronx, Akila Jamia Logan of Morganton, Khaaliq Amir EL Bey of Bronx, Nasir EL Bey of Bronx, Salim Shakair Logan of Morganton; two great grandchildren, Zaire Braddock of Bronx, Hasani Ogbonna Allen of Bronx; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., Sunday, August 17, 2014 at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton. A memorial service will be held at a later date in New York.
