(1911-2010)
Mrs. Myrtle Purcell Bowen, fondly known as "MaMa", age 98 of Griffin, GA and formerly of Waycross, GA, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at Brightmoor Nursing Center.

She was born June 13, 1911 in Glenville, Georgia as the daughter of the late Ida and Marvin Purcell and one of 10 siblings. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, William James Bowen as well as six brothers and sisters.

She was educated in the Appling County School System and employed as an Elementary
School Teacher for several years during her early adulthood. Later, after the birth of her three children, she was employed in the hospitality industry for many years. She served as the Dining Room Manager for the Okefenokee Golf Club of Waycross, the Waycross Elks Club and the Griffin Elks Club. She was well known for her "culinary skills" and catered many private events. Among her accomplishments was earning the prestigious title of Ms South Georgia in 1960. Her two most rewarding jobs were serving as Church Hostess for Trinity United Methodist in Waycross and First United Methodist in Griffin. She was a very active member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Waycross and later in life a member at First Baptist of Griffin.

Survivors include three children: daughter, Ann Imes Corry (Bill) of Griffin and Greensboro, son, Jimmy D. Bowen (Dell) of Louisville, KY , daughter, Jeanie Jones Wilson (John) of Greensboro (formerly of Griffin) and seven grandchildren: Carl (Betsy) Imes of Tyrone, Cindi Ann (Gary) Alexander of Griffin, Dr. Jimmy D. Bowen (Kelly) of Cape Girardeau, MO, Captain William Tay Bowen (Melissa) of Louisville, KY, Mari Ann Herman (Bob) of Omaha, NE, Lt. Thomas D. Jones (Robin) of Mobile, AL, James Bowen Jones (Stephanie) of Griffin and 17 great grandchildren.

A celebration service will be held Thursday, March 25th @ 3:00pm at the First Baptist Church of Griffin, with Visitation following. Dr. Bill Hardee, Pastor of First Baptist Church will officiate. A graveside service will be held in Waycross, GA on Friday, March 26th, 2010, at the Oakland Memorial Cemeteryat 1:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions be directed to, Stepping Stones, 141 Futral Road Griffin, GA, 30224.
