Behind his mild-mannered tax attorney exterior, Donald "Don" P. Hensel had an irreverent sense of humor that unfailingly found the absurd in every day events. He lived a life of amazing accomplishment in his unexpectedly short life, managing to reach the highest levels of success in every endeavor he attempted.
Don was born in Toledo, Ohio on August 10, 1970 to his parents, Pamela Whittington and Barry Hensel. His family moved to Indian Harbor Beach, Florida at the age of 10, where he completed high school with honors. Don went on to attend Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, where he graduated number one in his class while serving as the editor-in-chief of the school's newspaper.
In 1992, Don entered Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His strong academic achievement earned him a place with the Harvard Law Review and resulted in magna cum laude honors upon graduation in 1995. He then began a judicial clerkship with the Honorable R. Lanier Anderson of the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, whom he considered both a mentor and friend. When he completed the clerkship in 1996, he joined the tax department at King & Spalding in Atlanta, Georgia, where he made partner several years later.
While many people think they are the smartest person in the room, Don usually was – but one would never know it from the way he acted (with the exception of the times he played trivia games). He was unfailingly courteous and kind to everyone around him and the first to volunteer when a friend was in need. He was an outstanding listener in both his professional and personal life, and was often able to solve the complex problems that stumped those around him. This gave him a great deal of pleasure, as he considered the practice of law akin to putting a challenging puzzle together.
While at Harvard Law School, he met his wife, Wendy, who he married in Macon, Georgia on a beautiful spring day in 1995. They recently celebrated their fifteenth wedding anniversary on a cruise through the inside passage of Alaska, where Don successfully tried his hand at dog sledding and go-cart driving. Don always considered their two beautiful children – Grace, 11 and Luke, 9 – to be his greatest accomplishments in life. He was a loving father who, despite his busy work schedule, never failed to take the time to attend school conferences, band concerts, and bingo nights with his children. He treasured the time he spent with his family at their home on Fripp Island, South Carolina, searching out the location of wild alligators while riding in his golf cart. He will be sorely missed and never replaced.
Don is survived by his wife Wendy, his children, his parents, and many other loving family members.
Visitation for Don will be held Tuesday, October 19, 2010 from 6 o'clock until 8 o'clock at Patterson's Spring Hill. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, October 20 at 10:30 o'clock at All Saints Episcopal Church. Interment will follow at Arlington Memorial Park.
The family would like to thank our numerous friends and family for their loving support during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, we ask that anyone interested in making a donation do so in his honor to the Howard School of Atlanta.

Dear Wendy, Grace and Luke,
I just heard today of Don's passing. I can't comprehend the depth of your grief. I am so very sorry for your great loss.
I had the distinct honor of working with Don on a number of deals over the past 10 years. Most of our contact was over the phone but I always felt a warmth in our dealings that simply didn't exist in a normal business relationshp. It didn't take me long to come to the conclusion that this warmth this kindness was just Don. It seemed we always found time in our conversation to talk about our family and where we were going on the next family vacation. I recall one conversation earlier this year comparing notes of our Alaskan vacation.
Don was truly a remarkable man - in every respect! It is hard to understand why he was called home at such a young age. He will be missed by so many people he touched in a very unique way.
I will pray for your family that God showers you with His grace, His strength and His love.

To Don’s family, I had the pleasure of working with Don at Camp Thunderbird for a number of years. In fact he was the last cabin co-counselor I ever worked with. Don was a type person that I could sit here the rest of the day and try and think up something bad to say about him and could not come up with a thing to say. He was one of a kind and one of the nicest people I have ever known. This world was a better place with Don in it.

Dear Hensel Family,
I worked closely with Don for a couple of years when I was a corporate attorney at K&S and Don was involved in several deals with me. Although it has been 10 years since I worked with him, I remember him fondly for his inspiring attitude. He really set an example for combining humility with great intelligence and ability. I am very sorry for your loss.

To Don's family and friends....I am in a total state of shock...and cannot imagine the depth of your pain and sadness. My mother was just diagnosed with breast cancer and even though it helps hearing people say that she is in their prayers or how "sorry" they are to hear such news.... -- other days it just makes me crumble into a ball of tears before these same well meaning people. Don touched my heart back at Rollins and was always a kind, gentle soul. The world is a much better place because Don Hensel was a part of it! All my love and strength, tarita virtue (Rollins Class of '92)

To all of the Hensel family, it is true that this world has lost a bright shining light. I was lucky to have met Don earlier in the early 80's. He had a way to make a person's day get better just with a smile or pat on the back. I know that when a person felt out of sorts, he seemed to recognize it from far away and address it with kindness. He approached me once, on a very trying day....and after a good talk,(or listen) things just seemed better.
It is not everyone that can laugh at themselves and teach others to do the same. He was able to find humor in the smallest of things and also point out the positive.
There are no words to truly express the honor it has been to know him and the sorrow I have for your loss. God be with you all.

Dear Hensel family, We were in classes together starting in 7th grade at DeLaura and in the years that followed we all knew Don would aspire to a great many things. He certainly did. We are surrounding your family in love and prayer and know words are tough to come by at this time. So when the time is right you will be able to read these beautiful testiments to the light that Don's life did lead on everyone he met and hope they can bring some comfort. We all can say it was an honor to know Don and will always remember his smile.

I had the honor of knowing Don before he blossomed to the Harvard-law, well-respected attorney he became to be. We played piano duets together as youths in satellite/indian harbour beaches. His touch on the keys like his touch in life: confident, yet respectful of the melody.
Don was steadfast in those ambitions he tackled, and dependable to the core. He married a wonderful wife, created a splendid family, and was a example to those of us who had the good fortune of calling him friend.
To his family, there's nothing that could explain why someone so wonderful could be taken so young. But please know your son, husband, and father had the respect of many people, going back a long time. If we had more Don Hensel's in the world, we would live in a far better place.

Dear Wendy and family,
Words cannot express the shock and grief we feel at the loss of our dear Don. I met him when he was 10 years old , and I spent many happy hours with the whole Hensel family.... I used to (occasionally) drive him to Junior High School -- but my car (a 1964 Volvo) embarrassed him and he made me drop him two blocks away from the school... we spent years teasing him about that . His sense of humor was apparent even then !!
Don and Sarah were Jessie's first baby sitters, and always helped me with my annual Halloween bash. He took Jessie to her first high school school basketball game when she was three years old, . And he had the great temperment and energy to keep up with Ashley when she started zooming around. I remember when I met Wendy for the first time in Boston, and telling Pam and Barry that "he's going to marry that young woman!"
I have always felt that Don and Sarah were mine (as well as Pam and Barry's), and I am sending you all the love and blessings I have on this sad, sad day. May you have all the support you need in this time, and please count us in as part of that support. With love, the Babich's (Mike and Cindy)

Wendy, Grace and Luke--
The obituary does a wonderful job of capturing Don's intellect, personality and accomplishments. I particularly enjoyed the report of his leadership on the alligator searches at Fripp.
It has been my great privilege to work with Don throughout his career in the tax practice group at King & Spalding. Through his brilliant intellect and dedication, combined with his unflinching integrity and friendly demeanor, he became one of the nation's leading lawyers in the tax treatment of business entities and their owners. We have received a tremendous outpouring of sympathy and respect for Don from lawyers who knew him through the ABA Tax Section and from working across the table from him in transactions. King & Spalding has lost one of its superstars, and we will miss him terribly.
