Paul Roell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 10, 2011.

Paul Alfred Roell, MD. passed away peacefully Saturday, May 7 at St. Catherine's Village. He was born in Jackson, MS on June 21, 1930 to John A Roell and Ida Margaret Knecht Roell. He attended St. Joseph Catholic School from 1-12 grade
where he excelled in academics and several sports as well as earning his Eagle Scout award. He continued his Catholic education attending Spring Hill College in Mobile, AL, before graduating from Millsaps College with a BA in Chemistry.
After college he worked a short time for his family's businesses before entering the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He completed his internship and residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center before setting up his
anesthesiology practice in Jackson. He had privileges at the MS Baptist Medical Center, River Oaks Hospital and St. Dominic's Hospital. He was a board certified Anesthesiologist and a fellow of the International Board of Anesthesiology. He was also one of the original owners of the SurgiCare out patient surgery center on Lakeland Drive.

His life long avocation of thoroughbred horse racing led from hobby to business when he bought his very first horse Dicky Dan in 1961. Over the years his business, JanKar Stables, produced many fine quality horses including Dan N Doc, named after his horse racing business partner and himself, using the nickname his brothers called him, Doc. Dan N Doc was a two time Mississippi Thoroughbred Breeders Association award winner and multiple stakes winner. He was always happy to share the winners' circle with extended family and friends who joined him for official photos.

His real passion was his family. He was proceeded in death by his Mother and Father, his beloved wife of 41 years, Henrietta Marie Klaas Roell, his daughter Linda Diane Roell, and all four of his brothers, LeRoy, Harry, Jack and Floyd. He is survived by his daughter Janet Roell Naughton, her husband James (Jim) Michael Naughton Jr. and his granddaughter Olivia Catherine Naughton, his sister Ethel Roell Jones as well as many nieces and nephews.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Paul and Henrietta Roell Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The family would also like to thank Dr. Mac Addison and Gina Seago for their extended care, as well as Curtis, Beth, Cindy and Sonia of St. Catherine's Village Siena Two staff for their love and compassion.

Visitation will be Tuesday, May 10 from 5-7 pm with a rosary for the repose of his soul at 7:30 pm. A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, May 11 at 10 am at the Cathedral of St. Peter the Apostle.
