Winkie Jewell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 8, 2011.

Winkie Irene Jewell, a Prineville resident, passed away on Monday, September 5, 2011 at Ochoco Village Assisted Living. She was 90 years of age.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, September 10, 2011 at 10:00 am at Juniper Haven Cemetery followed at 11:00 am by a memorial service at the First Baptist Church in Prineville. Pastor Travis Hallman and Charley Hughbanks will officiate. Winkie was born in Yenaungyoung, Burma on October 15, 1920 to William Ross Hall Jewell and Irene Daisy (Ashton) Jewell.

As a youth, she attended a catholic convent in L.A. and then went to Santa Monica, CA where she finished high school at the Amaranth Masonic Home for Girls. Winkie also went to college for about one and half years in Santa Monica. She grew up all over the world as her father worked in the oil fields. She lived in Burma, South America (Peru), London, Guam, and all over Southern California. After working in several bakeries in Southern California, Winkie moved to Prineville in 1984 where she was employed as a cake decorator for Erickson's Sentry Market in Prineville. She retired after 10 years in 1994.

Winkie was a member of the First Baptist Church in Prineville where she was active in XYZ. She was also a long time member of the Scribblers, the Ochoco Players, Community Theatre of the Cascades, and the Prineville Women Connections, an interdenominational outreach for the women of Prineville. Winkie was very well known as an actress all over California, Prineville, and in Bend. She acted in more than fifty plays, including "Mousetrap", "Arsenic and Old Lace" and "Deathtrap", to name a few. She also acted in commercials in California. Having a delightful sense of humor, she loved to make people laugh and enjoyed socializing and opening her home for a variety of groups. Winkie had a very extensive collection of artifacts from all over the world. She loved animals raising Siamese cats, an iguana, several spider monkeys, as well as numerous beloved dogs throughout her lifetime. As a young woman, she accepted the Lord as her personal savior and made sure her children also knew the Lord.

Winkie is survived by her three children Kraig Lee and his wife, Carol Lute Bobbitt of Prineville, Kathie Lynn Bobbitt of South Gate, CA., and Wayne Ross and his wife, Vicki Bobbitt of Prineville; grandchildren: Elaine Brown and her husband, Michael of Carlsbad, CA, Tina Bobbitt Sedonne of San Francisco, CA, Tara Platt and her husband, Steve of Tualatin, OR Chad Bobbitt and his wife, Jaime of Longview, WA, great-grandchildren: Christopher Brown of Carlsbad, CA, Austin Bishop of Silverton, OR, Cierra Platt of Newburg, OR, Jared Platt of Tualatin, OR, Spencer Brown of Carlsbad, CA, Reid Bobbitt of Longview, WA, and Ava Bobbitt of Longview, WA. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of thirteen years, William M. "Bob" Bobbitt and a half -brother.

To the family of Winkie Jewell,

My deepest sympathy in the loss of your mother and grandmother. Although I never really met her, while I lived in Prineville, I may have had brief encounters with her at Erickson's Bakery.

I am Diana, a co-worker of Kraig Bobbitt at Cascade View Nursing Center.

Winkie and I were in several plays together at CTC. She was a most talented actress. It was always fun to have Winkie as a member of the cast.
