Mary Cox Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 23, 2011.

Mary Kathryn Beall Cox, 94, died on October 22, 2011, at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson, MS. She was a long time resident of Jackson, born on Dec. 25, 1916, to Thomas Benjamin Beall and Irene Harrison in Philipp, MS. As a child, she survived the Deemer Camp tornado in Philadelphia that killed her mother and several other relatives.

In 1937, she married Robert Kennedy Cox. In the early years they lived at the family home in Jefferson County, moving to Jackson in the 1950s. Mary worked at Farm Bureau Insurance until her retirement in 1982. She then embarked on a new career, selling antiques at the local flea markets. She became a mainstay of the Fairgrounds Antique Market, spending many happy years there until she was in her 90s.

She is survived by her daughters, Nancy Tyson, Queen City, TX; Bobbie Binder, Lenoir,NC; Margaret Cox Carroll, Jackson, MS; and Elizabeth Cox, Pearl,MS. Grandchildren: Bobby Shields, Kathy Wasson, John Shields, Rickie Shields, all of Queen City, TX; Roger Stringer, Denham Springs, LA, and Susanne Rivero, Lenoir, NC; twelve great grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren; twin sister Martha Ainsworth, Clinton and niece Irene Van Egmond, Bolton. Robert Cox died in 1974.

Mary Cox was a generous, tender, loving soul. She had a great sense of humor and a truly happy disposition and that is how we will always remember her.

Services will be 11:00am Tuesday at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home on High Street preceded by visitation at 9:00am. Graveside services will be at 2:00pm at Wintergreen Cemetery, Port Gibson, MS.
