George Terry Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 25, 2011.

George Fred (Tim) Terry III, 82, of Waterville died at the Togus Hospice on November 21, 2011.

Tim was born on October 6, 1929 in Waterville and was the son of George Fred Terry Jr. and Rheba Curtis Terry. The family lived for many years on Silver Street. Tim went to Waterville High School and then on to Gould Academy where he graduated in 1948. He then attended Colby College where he was proud to be in the class that began their college days on the downtown campus and graduated on the grounds of the brand new campus on Mayflower Hill in 1952.

After his Colby graduation Tim enlisted in the navy, graduating from Officer Training School in Newport, Rhode Island and serving aboard the USS Minos as a First Lieutenant during the Korean War. After leaving the service he returned to Waterville to work in his family's insurance business, the A.M. Drummond Company, which later became the Terry Worthen Insurance Company. In his later professional career he operated the Terry Insurance Company, which was affiliated with the GHM Agency. He served in many capacities during his career as an insurance executive and real estate agent.

In October of 1952 Tim married Natalie Rines of Waterville at the Colby Chapel. In March of 1954 their first child, George Fred Terry IV, was born at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Virginia. Their daughter, Sarah Ann Terry, was born in May of 1957 in Waterville.

The Waterville community, its people and events, were very important in Tim's life. An example of this is his commitment to the Rotary Club. He was a 50 year member and received the distinguished Paul Harris Award. Tim attended Rotary up until just a few weeks before his death and the camaraderie of the group bolstered his spirit each and every week.

Tim, known as G-Dad by his grandchildren, was extremely proud of all of them and their accomplishments. A shining moment during his illness happened last fall when he arranged for his granddaughter, Emma, to speak at Rotary about her work with the Chewonki Foundation. He closely followed granddaughter Rachel's trail journals during the time she thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail and, more recently, the Pacific Crest Trail. He paid keen attention to grandson Jence's descriptions of his designing and building of timber frame homes and barns and had hoped to watch a raising. He followed grandson Carter's career, taking special interest during his time aboard the NOAA ship Fairweather stationed in Alaska.

Tim was an avid lover of the natural world, the lakes and mountains of his home state of Maine. Another community that was central to his life was Sugarloaf Mountain. During the early 1960's he was the president of the former Bigelow Corporation, which was integral in the early development of Sugarloaf. Through the years Tim was active in multiple aspects of that community and enjoyed countless adventures in the Carrabassett Valley - from a little cabin beneath the bridge in Bigelow Village and later his second home of 38 years, a condominium on the mountain.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years Natalie Terry of Waterville, his daughter Sarah Carlson of Farmington, his daughter-in-law Pamela Grover Terry of S.Thomaston,, his sister Laures Terry Perkins of Topsham, his grandchildren Francis Jence Carlson and partner Katherine Jones-Lippy of New Vineyard, Emma Mabel Carlson of Tupper Lake, NY, Carter Wentworth Terry and wife Emily Evans Terry of South Berwick, Rachel Canning Terry and partner Gary Swing of Denver, Colorado, and his brother-in-law Donald Rines of Waterville, along with several nieces and nephews and his adored dog Jade. He was predeceased by his parents, his beloved son George F. Terry IV, his son-in-law Barry Francis Carlson, and his brother-in-law Donald Perkins.

Tim was an honorable man, a true gentleman of our world and a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Even though he is no longer with us, his memory will forever remain in our hearts.

The family would like to express deep gratitude to the outstanding staff of the Togus Hospice for their kindness and compassionate care during Tim's time with them.

A celebration of Tim's life will be held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church on December 9th at 1PM with Reverend John Belicki and Pam Morse, Sugarloaf Chaplain, officiating.

THose wishing to make donations in Tim's memory may do so to: the Sugarloaf Minstry, Village West #18. 5085 Access Road. Carrabassett Valley, ME 04947 and the Hospice Volunteers of the Waterville Area, 304 Main Street, P.O. Box 200, Waterville, Maine 04903

Dear Natalie and Family, Tim was a wonderful neighbor and friend and we valued his insight and guidance of the condo assoc and other Sugarloaf issues. We particularly enjoyed sharing amazement and joy of Jade and her antics. We will miss him and we hold you all in our thoughts and prayers.
