Billy B. Wood
COLUMBIA - Billy B. Wood, age 78, went to be with his Lord and Savior at Providence Hospital on March 30, 2013, after nineteen years of heart problems and congestive heart failure. The family wishes to thank Dr. Venk Gottipaty, Cardiologist and Dr. Jay Markowitz, Internist, for their years of dedicated health care. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Irmo/St. Andrews Chapel, 5400 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC. Conducted by Rev. David McGuirk with entombment in the mausoleum. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service.
Bill was born October 23, 1934 in Greer, SC to the late William Bomer Wood and Vera Bruce Wood and was a graduate of Greer High School class of 1953. His employment was with Credit Union Loan Management including Greer Homelite Div. of Textron, State League Credit Union in Columbia, Shell Oil Credit Union in Houston, Texas, Vice President of Loans, Federal Credit Union in Dallas, Texas.
Bill loved to travel since a little boy and enjoyed going in his RV all over the US and Canada several times including Halifax, St. John's, Newfoundland and across the US to British Columbia. He was a member of the Carolina Cruiser's RV Club and joined in many Rally trips. He enjoyed the winter months In Punta
Gorda, Florida and was a member of the Punta Gorda Lodge No. 2606 Benevolent and Protective Order Of the Elks.
Bill was known as an honest and reputable person and believed in the Lord and openly prayed daily for his friends and family. He was ordained a deacon at Washington Baptist Church, Greer, SC, and in 1994 was instrumental in the early re-birth of Yacht Cove Church. He attended Punta Gorda First United Methodist Church in Florida and most recently attended Salem United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Era Staggs Wood; one son, Thomas A. Wood and wife, Paula Compton Wood; one granddaughter, Ashley E. Richardson and husband, Bryan Richardson and one great- granddaughter, Marya Richardson; grandsons, Adam Bomer (Bo) Wood and wife, Crystal Petit Wood and two great-grandsons, Jackson and Logan Wood and grandson, Daniel A. Wood and wife, Brooke Cooper Wood; brother-in-law, Jim Stagg and wife, Margaret; sisters-in-law, Martha S. Hammett and husband, Mike and Ellen S. Watson and husband, Danny; one special "son" Randy Parrish; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins who were very close to Bill.
He was predeceased by sister, Mildred Adkins and brother, Lewis V. Wood.
Pallbearers are nephews, David Stagg, Doyle Lindsey, Vince Wood, Grady Adkins, Bruce Adkins and friend, Lane Phillips. Honorary Pallbearers include Martha Phillips, Leon and Patti Wingard, Larry Reynolds, Gene and Becky Tapp, John Hubbard and Verna Crosby, Pete and Gloria Oswald, Wynonia Jones, Barbara Henderson and the Yacht Cove Men's Breakfast group, spouses and friends. Memorials may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, Burn Care Unit, 950 W. Faris Rd. Greenville, SC 29605.
