William Shinn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 4, 2014.

William Wayne (Bill) Shinn, 85, of Weatherby Lake, Missouri passed away on January 2, 2014. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. at Platte Woods Methodist Church, 7310 Prairie View Road, Platte Woods, Missouri 64151 (church phone: 816-741-2972) followed by a celebration reception in the church's Memorial Hall to which all are invited. Light refreshments will be provided. No visitation will be held. A private inurnment ceremony is planned.

Bill was born in Kirksville, Missouri, on April 21, 1928, the only child of Iva Maine (Howell) Shinn and Wayne Noble Shinn, both deceased. His mother died 4 days after he was born, and many family members helped raise Bill, particularly his father's youngest sister, Ona (Shinn) Evans, to whom he remained very close until her death in 1981.

Bill's father owned Shinn Hatcheries, a chicken hatchery business near Kirksville, Missouri, and Bill seemed headed toward taking over the family business. But after graduating from Kirksville High School in 1946 and Northeast Missouri State Teachers College (now Truman State University) in 1949, Bill chose to study law, attending the University of Missouri Law School where he served as Chairman of the Missouri Law Review. While in law school, he married Loueva Jeanne Jones on August 19, 1951. After graduating from law school in 1952, he served 3 years in the United States Air Force as a member of the Judge Advocate General stationed at Wright Patterson Air Force Base and Burtonwood Air Force Base in England. Upon his honorable discharge from the Air Force, Bill joined the law firm of Shook, Hardy, and Bacon in 1956. He spent over 35 years at the firm, was a firm leader for many years, and served as managing partner before his retirement in 1994. While at the firm, Bill also represented the City of Gladstone, Missouri for many years.

Bill and Jeanne were married for 62 years, and she survives along with their four children Daniel (Petra), Lisa (John), Jennifer (David), and Melinda (Dempsey), all living in the Kansas City area, his sister-in-law Donna Kuczek of Denver, his brother-in-law Kevin Jones (Ann) of Marshalltown, Iowa, his cousin Steve Shinn, who was like a brother, of Lubbock, Texas, and ten grandchildren.

He was a long-time member of the Platte Woods Methodist Church in Platte Woods, Missouri. He was also active in the Marriage Enrichment organization and led many weekend retreats with Jeanne. He was a member of the University of Missouri Jefferson Club and the Law Society. His interests included reading, boating, and travel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association, 3846 W 75th Street, Prairie Village, Kansas 66208, the Platte Woods Methodist Church, 7310 NW Prairie View Road, Platte Woods, Missouri 64151, and the Liberty Hospital Hospice, P.O. Box 1002, Liberty, Missouri 64069.

You are a brilliant, irreplaceable light in our lives. Though our hearts overflow with sadness, we thank the Lord as he welcomes home our beloved husband and father. You will live in our hearts until we are together again.

Phyllis & HR Wurst

Dear Jeannie and Family,
HR and I have endless memories of your family, and our North Haven neighborhood. We had the privilege of living right next door to you. In fact it was Bill who told us that the house next door was being built by P.K. Gentry, and was for sale. We bought the house that same Sunday night. It was so wonderful to have you as our neighbors. When HR served as Gladstone mayor, Bill was right there as City attorney. He worked long hours as such, but they got a lot accomplished. Bill will be sorely missed. He remained a good friend. My love goes out to his whole Family. They will be in my thoughts and prayers, and may God give them supernatural peace that can only come from Him.

Sandra Bauer

Jeanne and Family, So sorry for your loss. Lane and Bill were such good friends and partners for so many years. The "old guard", so to speak, at the firm is dwindling, but their legacy will live on forever. My prayers are with you and your family. Fondly, Sandra Bauer

The Shinn's and the Swope kids were very close during the 1970's. I will always remember Bill's jovial personality, always joking and laughing. I spent many weekends at the Lake Weatherby house, boating, swimming and eating. My Mom used to always call and say "When are you coming home?" My response was "Do I have to? I am having too much fun". The Shinn parents were always encouraging and level headed. They always had the best advice. Bill is looking down on us now with his big, warm smile. He will be sorely missed.

The Shinn's and my family lived next door and the 8 of us kids, grew up together in the 60's. Have remained close for all these years even when my family moved from Gladstone in 1972. Spent many times with the Shinn's at the Weatherby Lake house, going out on the party boat with Bill. I have many happy memories spending time with Bill and the family. Back in those days, all the kids in the neighborhood knew each other and spent time together everyday. I used to love to watch Bill tease his kids and I saw him laugh a lot. He was a terrific husband, father and friend. Always there for you, when needed. I loved his personality and his great sense of humor. He will be missed and never forgotten! Prayers and love to Jeanne, Danny, Lisa, Jennifer and Melinda.
