Ralph Winfred Roper age 84 of Surfside Beach, SC and formally of Morganton, passed away Tuesday, May 13, 2014. He was born to the late Luther McDowell Roper and Mary Eloise Buff Roper on October 20, 1929 in Burke County. Ralph served his country honorably, retiring from the U.S. Air Force as a Chief Master Sargent with over 28 years of service. He was a member of the Sumter Masonic Lodge No. 364. Everyone that met Ralph became his friend and he was loved by all. Ralph was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be greatly missed.
Along with his parents, Ralph is preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Yount Roper; a set of infant twins; two sisters and one brother.
Those left behind to cherish his memory include a son, Fred Roper and his wife, Valeria of Loris, SC; a daughter, Janice Roper Hill and her husband Roy Lee of Randleman; two brothers, Billy Joe Roper and Carroll Roper and wife, Dorothee, both of Morganton; three sisters, Nelleen Ross, Ruth Walker and Brenda McCurry and her husband, Norris, all of Morganton; four grandchildren, Shawna, Jeanna, Rachel and Anthony; and three great grandchildren, Kendra, Madeline and Mathew. Also surviving are three nieces, six nephews, numerous other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, May 17, 2014 in the Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home with the Reverend J.R. Richards officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery with full military honors provided by the U.S. Air Force.
Kirksey Funeral Home of Morganton has the honor of serving the family.
