Edward "Mack" Penwell passed away Monday, November 10, 2014 at his home in Morganton, North Carolina.
Mack Penwell was born June 21, 1944, in Bertie County, NC. He was the son of the late Henry Edward and Lena Mae Penwell. He was preceded in death by his brother, James Robert " Bud" Penwell and sisters, Susie Mae Faulker and Elizabeth Ann Early. He is survived by his wife Dorothy Penwell, her son Bill Alman of Morganton and his two children, Margie Penwell of Aulander, NC and E. Lee Penwell and wife Deborah of South Mills, NC. He is also survived by his two grandsons, Sebastian Lee Rubio-Torres and Cameron Lee Penwell.
He served his country proudly during the Vietnam War. Mack was a man of many talents and hobbies. He loved gardening and fishing. Whatever Mack did, it seemed that he rose to the top, beginning as a high school state football champion to winning multiple North Carolina and a U.S. Croquet Championship. He was also inducted into the Croquet Hall of Fame. Mack never seemed to have a "sticky wicket". He will be missed by his family, friends and peers.
A memorial service will be held at Mount Home Baptist Church in Morganton on Saturday, November 15, 2014 at 2:00 pm. The family will receive guests at the church starting at 1:00 pm. Condolences for the family may be left at www.kirkseymorganton.com.

Big Mac will be missed. He was one of the first croquet greats I ever saw!!! Always in a happy mood. It was such an honor to have him play on MY court.
He ran a croquet court like Jackie Gleason playing billiards in the Minnesota Fats movie.
Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to Dorothy and the family.

We are saddened to hear of Mac's passing. He was a gentleman, quietly spoken, firm in resolve, and true to his feelings. His contribution to the sport of croquet and the fellowship that is enjoyed by that community in NC over the last thirty years was enormous. Our thoughts are with Dorothy, and their family, at this time of loss.

I was deeply sadden when I heard of Mac's passing. My family have known this family for many years. His parents lived beside our family when I was growing up as a child. His daddy and my daddy loved to go fishing together and Mac coached me when I played football for the Aulander Demons.Hadn't seen him in a long time but still remember those good times. Our deepest condolences go out all his loved ones. RIP Coach Mac!

Mac was a fixture in Aulander for many years. I worked with him for a short while at the paper mill in Franklin. America is thankful for his Army service in Vietnam. I last saw him in Pinehurst at the croquet course a few years ago. He was same ole Mac. God bless his family. Johnnie Ray Farmer, Aulander, NC
