Juanita S. O'Neil, 79, of Morganton, passed away Thursday, February 5, 2015 at Burke Hospice and Palliative Care in Valdese.
Mrs. O'Neil was born in Burke County, North Carolina on June 29, 1935, to the late William & Lula Gwen Surratt. She was married to William Howard O'Neil, who preceded her in death in 1992. Mrs. O'Neil was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Morganton. She was a custodian at Mountain View Elementary School and Freedom High School, with whom she retired after twenty three years of dedicated service. For more than thirty years, she was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed sewing, working in her flower garden, and was an excellent cook. Most importantly, Mrs. O'Neil dedicated her life to the Lord and was very active with her Church. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, all of whom she loved dearly.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Dennis O'Neil; and two brothers, Charles Surratt and John Surratt.
Survivors include two sons, Melvin D. O'Neil and William H. O'Neil; two daughters, Susan A. O'Neil and Kathy O'Neil & husband William; a brother, William Surratt; a sister, Dannie Gwen; an aunt, Nell Johnson, all of Morganton; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren; nine great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A funeral will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, February 12, 2015 at New Hope Baptist Church with the Reverend Max Bristol officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., prior to the service at the Church.
